wanna know a reason our defense hasnt been up to par

Every team we faced march down the field(easily) against us... We made the freaking TE of V. Tech to look like Tom Brady for god sake!!!!

I'm sure that ranking has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that our defense can't get off the field. Like being ranked 83rd in first downs given up. Or being ranked 75th in 3rd down pass efficiency. Or 70th in yards per play given up. I'm sure all that stuff is just a coincidence.

But here, if you want some more in-depth stats. Take a look at this site for which you can see the measure of efficiency of both sides of the ball. There's a good explanation as to how they derive their stats.

I can save you some time though and just tell you that our offense is ranked in the top 10 in two of their efficiency ratings and our defense just so happens to be ranked in the 80's in both of them.

It does work both ways though... If the defense forced more 3-and-outs, the offense would've had more opportunities to score, thus improving the overall time of possession... Just saying.

Remember when we had Shannon, everyone was saying how our kids were so small compared to other teams? Remember that we were ALWAYS getting pushed around, lol? Remember that under Randy we had no nutritional guidelines? That was the concern, then, remember???
Our problems now (NOT necessarily in order):

1. Our DC! If u know anything about football, take a look at UVA first TD. Call a **** TO and get lined up right!
2. No explosive players in front 7 (other than DP). Some of our LB's are Bad!
3. Our Safety's...LMFAO! Not good!
4. Too much running around at the snap of the ball, which shows me, that the kids may not totally understand the **** playbook... problem! Get fuccin lined up...CORRECTLY!!!
5. DC! Again, its HIS JOB to fix this S#1T, but I don't know if he's capable!

Guys, its NOT the scheme! There are some schools that run it effectively. FSU, ALA comes to mind. ****, FSU recruits the same **** kids that we do! We do run 2 gap, too much, which IMO, slows us down. Slant more, play more 1 gap, bring different backers on run blitzes.
How can FSU run this D better than us? Their DC has been there 1 season....ours, 3! Don't add up!
Either we got the dumbest players on the planet, or we got a DC that can't get it done on this level!

And if our offense was as bad as our defense, we'd be 1-11 or maybe, maybe 2-10 with the wins being Savannah State, and maybe USF.

Their last 3 classes have been a bunch of 5* on defense....
 
^^^ I agree, but watch them play! They are aggressive. They don't beat themselves by lining up wrong. That's not a talent issue! My point is that the FSU kids have seemingly bought into the new system a lot faster than ours. Our guy has been coaching here for 3 years! Allowing teams to A$$ rape us up and down the field, is not cutting it. We should not be allowing 500yds week after week. Most of our mistakes are not lack of talent mistakes.
 
lets be real you know i meant time of possession when you lack talent and depth=trouble

please top with how much better the offense is. dallas carried us through unc and duke carried us against wake and fsu. we had no other offense. except for a screen pass or a pass coley turns into a huge, we have no passing game. after ga tech this defense was on the field an unacceptable amount and that is when lack of depth began to show.

God this argument is ridiculous. Blaming the offense for the defense.

If the defense could ever get off the field, then the offense would have the ball more and would put up more yards/points.

**** that offense for putting up 475 yards and 41 points vs Pitt. Those ********. That is why the defense gave up 500+.

I re-watched the game using the re-wind and there were two things that stuck out more than anything else. (1) I could not understand why I saw Gilbert, Porter and Washington in coverage and (2) Guys like 31 not wanting to be touched, thus the stuck their arms out for some kind of non functional effort to tackle.

Crazy thought here.. and remember I said crazy... but maybe its not the offenses fault that the defense is on the field so much. Perhaps it is a result of poor play and poor play calling. I mean if you allow teams to go 65% on 3rd down your morethan llikely going to have trouble getting off the field. Maybe just maybe if we could just limit 3rd down defense to oh idk maybe 40% we could have won 2 more games.. or maybe if 95% of our sacks came against teams not named fau Savannah st or usf we would be better defensively.

Again I know these are ludicrous statements and we shouldn't be expecting that much but hey one can dream can't they?

Bulked up LBs = less speed. Bulked up DL = less explosive moves. I'd rather have smaller, quicker guys than big, slow ones.

Mickey Andrews always preached speed. FSU defenses in the 90's were dominant. That's what we should be aiming for. This isn't the Big 10. Golden has the wrong idea.

Gaining lean muscle mass & weight does not automatically = less speed. Anyone claiming this as fact doesn't know their head from their *** when it comes to strength and conditioning, speed and agility.
 
The premise of the original post is mis-guided. Could our offense have helped our D at certain times this year, by extending drives and converting on third down? Of course. Any time this defense is on the sidelines is a good thing for Canes fans.

But the main reason our Time Of Possession was so lopsided, was our defense sucked. There is no way around that.
