It was brought over via slave trade in the 1500’s, died when the island became more sophisticated(not completely), and became popular again under the socialists of Cuba/Fidel in the 50’s. The difference is you have to believe in Catholicism because Santeria means worship of saints. I wrote a paper on it in high school for World History.
