Virginia Tech's future

Not sure the exact timeframe here, maybe last 2-3 years, but VT has plateaued or even taken a step back. Remain solid because of Beamer and playing to a system in place for 2-plus decades. They recruit well to system and also have a fertile recruiting area. One would assume Foster has first dibs on the job, if interested. Money isn't an issue as Beamer is paid right up there with college football's big boys.

Interesting to see if this plays out along the lines of FSU and Bobby Bowden. Lot of folks assumed Mickey Andrews would get a shot. Foster is mid-50s and if Beamer hangs around another five years or so, the faithful coordinator wouldn't be a spring chicken, either. Name to keep an eye on his Shane Beamer - Frank's kid and current associate head coach.

That sounds disastrous.

They are going to get Norm Chow's cousin:

Beamer makes $2.3 Million per year, which is a lot, but not near the top of college football. Do we know if they'd be willing to shell out the $4-5 million that is soon going to be the norm for the top SEC schools?

Interesting question, as consistent as VT has been through the last several years they're still not looked upon as a premier program.
They have great facilities and a solid fanbase, but they're stuck right there with WVU. Maybe it's location, I don't know. As difficult of a time as they have with recruiting now, losing lots of kids, even to UVA, they would have to make a massive hire to keep up.
I think it's going to be tough with Miami and FSU climbing back up and Clemson strong, you're behind the eight ball taking that job following Beamer.

VAgTech's claim to fame came from beating us. They absolutely have what it takes to win consistently. The only problem is that Beamer it too stubborn to adjust with the times. His strategy has been Defense, Special Teams and black scrambling QB in a boring smash mouth system who can run when the plays breakdown because he cant read defenses. When that QB is a Vick or Tyrod Taylor then you will look very good doing it. When that player is Logan Thomas...you might get fired. lol

If I'm Frank Beamer at his age, if he is thinking of retiring, then I'd hire one of these young, crazy, mad scientist, high tempo, spread OCs to go with Bud Fosters defense and try to get one last 3 year run to see what could happen if they could average 30 points a game. But I'm a CANE so **** BEAMER AND TECH I hope they never change...bums.

With Beamer out, it's hard to say since getting rid of a dinosaur is usually always helpful these days.

That said, I think they'd experience a 2-3 year lull of 7-5/8-4 type seasons but there's enough talent in that tidewater area to keep them running for tops in the ACC for years to come, imo.

Notsince1985 I think Beamer will ride that train until it runs off the track or the institution shuts it down. Looking at their recent past record back to 2008-2009, they have lost on average about 3 games a season, last year being the exception. To me, that seems about right for who they are. Again, last year they feel off, but this year they have 1 loss. So, I just don't see that guy getting out of the drivers seat anytime soon.

Maybe im in the minority but I think Vtech will actually be BETTER when/if Bud Foster takes over. Kinda like Dabo Swinney when he took over at Clemson. I think he will recruit better and I think he will still have his hand in that defense. Put me in the group of people that will keep a close eye out on Vtech once Beamer steps down. Also, we need Vtech to be good. I dont know how long Dabo can keep this charade going over in Death Valley. Boyd and Watkins are gone after next year. We need the ACC to have AT LEAST 3 top tier, top 15 type teams every year for us to get respect.

I think us and FSU will firmly plant ourselves in the top 10 from here on out. We need that 10-15 range team to keep things legit. (VaTech, Clemson) And of course a few bottom feeders from the 20-25 range. Like Ole Miss, Auburn, Tenn, and Miss St are for the SEC. (UNC, NC State, Maryland, Gatech) This is why the SEC gets so much **** respect nationally. They keep at least 6 teams inside the top 25 at all times. The "bottom feeders" keep them consistant from top to bottom.

them not winning a meaningful bowl game in a long time is possible reason why theyre not viewed as a premier program. oregon, who has zero titles like VT, has still won some BCS games over the years. everytime vt gets to a bcs bowl, they end up losing.

I don't think bemmer is going anywhere but if he does I could see vt going after pat Fitzgerald northwestern coach or even grage schiono I don't think hes feeling that nfl life...

If we continue on our current path, VT will continue it's slide to medicocrity and irrelevency.

They have one or two BCS bowl wins, hardly any wins against top tier OOC opponents (maybe one, that win against a down LSU team in like 2001), just some lousy ACC titles, most due to the fact that we had Coker and Shannon.

I liked VT's class they had last year. Seems like they're going to have a pretty talented defense the next few years. If they run into a QB or a running back they'll be pretty much what they usually are.

While VT has had solid teams, their peak was a clear result of the downfall of Miami and FSU. Now that Clemson, FSU, and Miami are relevant again, you see what is happening.

They have defeated one top 10 team in the history of their program that finished the year in the top 10 (2003 Canes)

They won 1 BCS bowl game(Cincy).

Beyond that, not much to brag about other than some solid seasons which were inflated by weak schedules.

I talked to some va tech fans at the bama game this year and they said bud doesn't want to be a HC. He doesn't want to have todeal with everything that goes along with it
