Where do you guys think VPI goes after Beamer retires? It seems Beamer is headed in the wrong direction now, and I don't think he's going to coach for much longer. He turns 67 in October, and has been at VPI for 26 or 27 years. Can they hire a big name coach? Do they promote from within (Bud Foster). Do they hire a young up and coming coach? What I'm getting at is, will VPI be a solid team/program in the future, because as much as I hate them, Beamer and their fans, for 15-20 years, they've been solid, or will they fade away. They were utter garbage before Beamer arrived. Like, getting blown out by Tulane and winning 2 games a year, garbage.

Has Beamer built a program that someone can just slide in and keep running, or does it fall apart when he retires?

yes he's 4-1 this year with only loss being to Bammer

clearly he's headed in the wrong direction

They have wins over Western Carolina, Marshall in 3 OT, GT and ECU. They were 7-6 last year. After winning the ACC almost every year and going to Orange Bowl after Orange Bowl, and playing for the national title in '99, I'd say the program has slipped the last couple of years. I don't think this year's team is very good in spite of their record, but even if it is, that's not the point of the post or of the thread.

their D looks good (not sure how good tho) but more of a product of the schedule. outside of the TAMU game, bamas offense hasnt been lighting anyone up so idk how legit their offense is either (ppl talk bout vt stopping bamas O)

I think they'll probably make a run at Foster. He's certainly earned the opportunity. If they pursue an outside hire, I think they go mid-major or maybe Bohl at ND State.

I don't think Foster is a HC. He would have left by now. He probably is good with where he is, not having to deal with the media.

Its a matter of if they hire a good replacement or not. Bud Foster might work, but sometimes the 'promote the long-time DC' route doesn't work. (Randy Shannon and Frank Spaziani). I've never been a fan of internal hires unless they're the planned-sort (Chip Kelly at Oregon for instance)

I don't think they necessarily have to follow Beamer's model either. If I were them I'd hire a young, rising offensive coach with a prolific offensive philosophy (a Kliff Kingsbury/Chad Morris type) that could help inject some recruiting and overall program excitement. Supposedly their recruiting has taken a bit of a hit from Mike London.

Their days of winning the division every year are basically over, but there's no reason they can't continue to at least be solid with competent leadership. They have enough of a talent-base to fuel them. But with a bad hire they could certainly regress.

It has been awhile since they mounted something offensively and last year was pretty bad. They sunk the last 2 years and this year into a QB who can't throw. They haven't been able to run the ball since Wilson left and that continues this year (the run game is key to Beamer's success).

I think the future is a 54 year old coach named Bud who will be an HC for the first time. I think they should go to him next year but they will likely give Beamer another year if he won't retire (he has earned it). I think the program has changed for the worse (turned the corner) and they haven't been able to recruit as well mostly because of UVA and London.

VT could win 9-10 regular season games this year but with that defense, they could do a lot more. They knew about their QB and RB issues last year, what happened? Perhaps if they had another RB recruit ready after Wilson (2011) they would have had more success. Perhaps the only reason Logan Thomas was successful in 2011 was the run game (a run threat).

I think Bud Foster is the Head Coach in Waiting isn't he? If Beamer retires then Foster takes over. Program will slowly slowly move down into obscurity.

They'll still be relevant. Their alumni have gotten used to winning, so they'll open up the wallets for the next HC.

Hot water burn baby!!!

Sure Beamer has done good things at that program, but VT could be so much better than what they are. Great fans, and a great stadium. That is one of the hardest places to come away with a victory at. They sit in a great area for recruiting, and yet they can't even get the best players from that area.

Even though they have been a consistent team. Beamers greatest success came 14 years ago, and had it not been for coaching in one of the worst conferences in big boy football. He would've most likely been replaced by now. If VT went out and got a HC, with fire, and a exciting brand of football. VT would be a great team, no matter what conference you put them in.

Plenty of great QB, RB, and WR from that region. That overlook VT because of the bland system they run. Micheal Vicks don't grow on trees. Good QB, and WR play is what is holding this team back, but who blames these kids from avoiding the ole pound the ground, and let defense win game approach.

There's only one reason Pud Foster has turned down giant raises from uf.ag, South Carolina and Clemson--they've clearly promised the HC gig to him after Flubberneck crawls into his neck pouch cocoon and shuts it down.
