Virginia Tech Recap & Post Game Plus/Minus

Our coordinators and Golden being emotionally tied to his friend are handicapping our team. Ppl say we don't have the "talent" on defense. Ok when you don't have "talent" u attack the offense and dictate what they can do, not sit back and let them pick their spots all night and make you're D that doesn't have the "talent", react to what they do. I'm tired of the zone running on offense when we have a huge o-line that can run downhill. If it wasn't for the "few" deep throws downfield, you would think Patrick Nix has been calling the plays again. No wonder Jimbo wouldn't give up the play calling duties. This **** sucks!!!! Stood in the rain for that bull****!!!

VT had not scored more than 30 points against a I-A team all year until tonight (they scored 45 against I-AA Western Carolina).

VT averaged 22 points per game. They scored 42 against Miami
VT averaged 348 total yards per game. They gained 549 against Miami
VT averaged 116 yards rushing per game. They gained 183 against Miami
VT averaged 231 yards passing per game. They gained 366 against Miami
VT turned it over 8 times the last 2 games. They didn't commit a turnover against Miami

Marshall, East Carolina, Pitt and Duke all shut down this team. I really don't know what to think or do anymore. I'm done with Coach D, but Golden won't cut ties with him, so what's the point in complaining?

I'm not thrilled with Coley as an OC, but the offense was the least of the problems tonight. 24 points should have been more than enough (see their stats above). Morris had 2 TDs of over 80 yards. We should have won with him doing that and not throwing an INT. One big concern I have is that Ryan Williams is either really bad, or Coley and Golden are making a big mistake in not even letting him get garbage time. Unless they think he has no shot to beat out Olsen next year, why not let him finish out the FSU game last week? Morris going to rally us from a 27 point deficit in the last 4 minutes? Why not let Williams have the last drive tonight? Morris going to rally us from an 18 point deficit in the last 1:30?

I'll watch the rest of the games, but it'll just frustrate me even more. We'll lose to Duke, beat UVA, and Pitt will be a toss up. We'll finish 9-3 or 8-4 and go to the Belk Bowl or the Music City Bowl.

Amazing....

I am the BIGGEST HOMER EVER. I supported Shannon to the END. We need new players.

They are STUPID. ACC on the line. HOW DO YOU FUMBLE TWICE IN A ROW! How do you not TACKLE. They go for the ESPN highlight hit TO THE DETRIMENT of the TEAM.

++

Both true frosh... I validate it with them trying to do to much, But F... our D for not stopping L. Thomas, the worst QB in the 3rd best BCS conference.

Morris was good enough to win

No he wasn't

Yes he was. No turnovers. Offense put up 24 points. VT was averaging 22 points per game. He was good enough to win. He's not good, but he was good enough.

For ****s sakes he had 324 yards 2 TDs and 0 INTs. Best performance by a QB this year vs VTech. VTech was the #1 pass D in the nation.

You know how sometimes they say stats can be decieving? This is one of those times!! He got that 80 yard or so touchdown to Allen when we were down 35-17. That last drive shouldn't count, so that puts him around or below 200 yards when the game mattered!!

We were still in the game. Herb also dropped an easy big play.

I don't care if people hate Morris but to say he didn't play well is just being biased. There D holds QBs under 50% and have 17 INTs on the year.

Their pass coverage wasn't that great and He didn't play well at all outside of a few throws. Everything else was him being scared to step into a throw with a defender more than 2 steps away from him or panicking after his first read wasn't open. When that happened, he just threw the ball to invisible receivers. Coley definitely isn't helping him whatsoever. Morris and Coley are the feast or famine brothers this year for sure and GOLDEN needs to fix that ****.

* A plus is any game in the rain. My dad died a year ago. He loved bad weather games, always reminiscing about ones he played in high school. Dad said nobody could get solid footing so you couldn't get hurt. It was slogging around. As a fan he would always turn the channel to snow games or rain games even if he otherwise had no interest. So I sat there tonight, literally the only remaining fan in my section for the final 8 minutes, and savored every bit of the experience, despite the outcome and my waterlogged clothes seemingly adding an extra 100 pounds. The alumni cheerleaders and alumni Sunsations kept the energy and smiles until the last second ticked off the clock. Lots of effort goes into homecoming, even our sad version of homecoming in a stadium nearly an hour away.

* This experience reminded me of fun Friday nights as a kid, with sheets of rain pelting the Orange Bowl. Those games often played out like tonight, with big plays but unfathomable mistakes, and no real hope of victory in the second half. My family and I always stayed through the last snap. But everything was preferable in the Orange Bowl, even the parking. Tonight I was literally cursed at by two parking attendants, telling me to turn left when the freeway was right. I needed to go right but they decided to divert everyone left, beginning with my car. No problem...cost me an extra half hour and probably two gallons of gas. I despise Sun Life, even if I own the stock and the nice quarterly dividend.

* Stephen Morris at game's end was a plus. Quite a bit of class. He shook hands with Hokie players and coaches and stood prominently in front of the Band of the Hour as they played the alma mater in the rain. The vast majority of our players disgusted me. They bolted to the tunnel immediately as the game ended, not showing any respect to Virginia Tech or University of Miami traditions.

* Malcolm Lewis was a minus. That was easily the saddest play of the game, when he caught a pass in open space with a minute remaining and couldn't do anything. I almost want to forget what he looked like before Georgia Tech.

* Special teams blocking were a plus. I'm not sure what it looked like on camera but in the stadium we were creating seems everywhere.

* Fan loyalty and perseverance was a plus. It rained hard just before halftime. When everyone left, I expected 80% would not return. Virtually everyone did. It was still loud and hopeful through late in the third quarter. The departures began when Virginia Tech recovered the dagger fumble in the end zone

* Low expectations were a huge plus. I certainly benefitted tonight. This was a very poor situational spot, as I detailed this week. Combine that with a #27 team naturally playing its way back to that level, and the negatives tend to overflow. Technical handicapping is basically irrelevant at that point. There are still some posters here in denial regarding how influential the situational factors can be. It would have been nice to burst to an artificial lead minus the early fumbles, but that's all it would have been...a temporary mirage.

* Oh gad, the uniforms. That's such a joke I can't even classify it as a minus. What is 1000 levels below a minus? That's where those uniforms belong, along with anyone who played a role in their design and acceptance. This was the second time in three nights I experienced a uniform atrocity. My alma mater Southwest was playing for its first unbeaten regular season in school history on Thursday night against Coral Gables. Southwest showed up in black uniforms. The school colors are purple and white. It was homecoming, with alumni dating to the 1960s in the stands, as detailed in the Herald article on Friday morning. Many of the alumni didn't recognize Southwest when the team entered the field. Shocked faces everywhere around me. Some of them hadn't seen a game in decades. I had to explain that every schlock teenager and young fan somehow thinks that black uniforms are tough and magnificent, and can't imagine how anyone can think otherwise. Traditions be damned...give us black. Southwest lost, which I expected as soon as I saw those uniforms. Same tonight.

Hey, every game is different. We can't go on what Va Tech did in other games.

Maybe if you were comparing 1 other game, but we are comparing all of their games.

We were 3-12 on third down conversions. And they batted about 1000%. That's the difference.

Our ****** defense was on the field all fuxking game because our shirty offense couldn't stay on it

Our defense can't blame any other part of the team for staying on the field. 3rd down was VT's best play.

Awsi Dooger, sorry bro, but I dont give a **** about class or singing some stupid band of the hour song after losing a game like that. I want my players ****ed off. Thats how you CHANGE THE CULTURE. I bet it was the Fr and So that left the field in disgust. The Srs, who are use to losing games like this so it doesnt even faze them anymore, were "business as usual". This loss is unacceptable on so many levels. I need that whole team to be so angry that they cant sleep for days. They dropped the ball. They ruined the season. Another year where Vtech is the ACC Coastal champion. Its almost embarassing at this point.

And btw, Frank Beamer will probably secretly admit this is his WORST TEAM IN YEARS AND HE STILL GOT THEM TO THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!!!!!! SMH.
