Virginia Key Considered For New Stadium

It's astonishing the amount of money they've put in to SLS already and it's still a dump. It's equally astonishing they want to poor more money into SLS to make it "Super Bowl worthy." With any foresight at all, they would have built a brand new state of the art stadium in the parking lot and knocked SLS to the ground already.

I don't care if it's 35k, 40k or 50k....give me a small state of the art stadium and I'm all in.

What makes SLS a dump? Granted it isn't Jerry's World but it isn't a dump. SLS sure is better than UF's Ben Hill Griffin Stadium that was opened in 1930. I never hear Dolphin fans complaining about SLS. Beckham isn't going to build a state of the Art stadium even for MLS standards. Then any extra seats for football would be as cheap and be the smallest narrow seats as he can squeeze in. 50K is the minimum that UM could continue their football program with income from a stadium since we sell over 53K tickets now.

The new candidate stadium site on Virginia Key does not touch the Marine Stadium. Use Google Earth or Google Maps and you'll see a vast undeveloped plot of land over 100 acres that's dirt and parking lots now. Could have the most scenic stadium in the world and that has to be an appeal to David Beckham's group.

Since when do we consistently sell over 53k? We lie about our attendance and only two games got to 53k last year. The Florida game and the employee appreciation game where they were selling 3 tickets for the price of one.

When UM actually cares about football, we will have our own stadium. The bad news is That the stadium lease at SLS is for 30 years. The good news is that SLS won't be around for 30 or even 15 more years. Shalala won't be around at UM for another 15 years either.

What is the buyout?

UM just like every NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS and every other NCAA teams uses tickets sold as their attendance count not true attandances. UM makes revenue based on ticket sales and not just on people that show up. UM like FSU and UF have to pay taxes on tickets sold no on true attendances. This is tickets sold not true attendances "Hurricanes Football: Attendance History" You can't sell tickets for seats you don't have since that if fraud. Even if we had a tiny $35K stadium we still could get 5K no shows. One thing for sure if our football team doesn't cover the expenses the football program will be down graded $$ to match our revenue. UM eliminated our basketball program in the 70's and almost eliminate our football program since it has to make money or it will be gone. There is NO WAY UM could ever competed for a National Championships with the funding produced by a tiny 35K stadium.

BS, on the UF tickets were three tickets for the price of one like you claimed.

Why are you now reducing the stadium capacity by 5k when 40k is considered the minimum. UM reports tickets sold? Even with tickets sold being accurate we only got to 53k twice.

I'm not going to argue with you regarding how many seats are necessary. We'll agree to disagree.

With respect to SLS, maybe "dump" was the wrong adjective. Yes, you can eat off the floors of the stadium, there are flat screens at the vendors, and the bathrooms are spacious. However, it is a horrific place to watch football. You know, the very reason why I'm there? The site lines are terrible. I find myself watching the jumbotron when the team is on the opposite side of the field. There are waaaay too many seats for what we need and a total lack of atmosphere. Even the UF game wasn't sold out and 30k Florida fans showed up. For noon games the place feels like a giant concrete hot box. The stadium just sucks for watching football. I'd prefer a 40k stadium where were all on top of the action. If that means we turn away 20k misfits for the FSU game, so be it.

Source for Virginia Key??

Also even if they were to do that they would have to add multiple lanes for traffic to get in and out.

One cool feature I could see is people coming on boats and docking them. University of Washington has fans arrive that way for games since their stadium is on Lake Washington.

**** I could imagine the amount of p*$$y in tiny *** bikinis tailgating and partying on the boats.

I agree the site lines at SLS are terrible just like they will be at any stadium that designed for soccer since it is a wider field than football. Beckham's MLS stadium will have the same terrible site lines with the seats way back from football sidelines.

The UF game was sold out and a lot of gators didn't show up since that was about the only empty section I saw at that game. Ok for most games SLS is too large but for FSU, UF, Ohio State, Nebraska and Michigan State a 50K stadium is too small. I care about tickets sold that is revenue that goes to UM to build a winning football program since their will always be a high amount of no shows regardless of the stadium size.

I didn't like Dodge Island but Virginia Key at least has parking space. Still don't like playing in a cheap MLS alumminun erector set stadium that even FIU's will be a better stadium unless you count the Virginia Key view that I could care less about at a football game.

Tailgating on boats would be absolutely insane. I love it.

If they could get a stadium on Virginia Key you could realistically see a MetroRail connection spring up out there. That'd be a great way to alleviate traffic problems and ensure a safe trip to and from the stadium for students/residents. Also, the University wouldn't need to commission shuttles anymore, people could just hop on the Metro from campus (or anywhere) and drink their way to the stadium. Extend it out to Key Biscayne and people could use that train to commute or go to the beach.

What else we got?

...One accident and that place is completely unaccessable.
Yea, don't see how that'll work. Also I don't get point about the picturesque setting being a plus. ESPN always says, "we're here live from South Beach", for every home game when we're nowhere near it anyways. And yet they still manage to show endless amounts of b-roll of chicks getting sun on the beach with the games at Sun-Life.

Agree with it being a terrible idea. One route into and out of the stadium area. One. How many people will be late to their seats? How many hours will it take to get out of there?

Sunlife has mulitple entrances feed by two MAJOR highways turnpike and 27th ave with 826 and 821 feeders...and it takes a solid 2 hours after a FSU game at 11pm at night or 2 hrs at 2pm to get in...yes I see no issues with a one lane in and out with 99% people heading west after a game...

Nice idea but traffic would be ridiculously bad (unless we all took our boats).

Tropical park or bust.

Upgrade the Vizcaya Station and create a MetroRail extension out to the stadium along the Rickenbacker causeway. Only run the trains when there's an event going on at the stadium that day to keep costs down. That'd be fun as **** going out to the games, drinking alongside your fellow Canes with that awesome view, and not having to deal with drinking/driving/traffic/parking.

I hear ya...lets hope the REAL people that make the decisions do.
