With the numerous problems at the Port of Miami site (too expensive a land value, too small, too difficult to get to etc.) Virginia Key is considered a viable option. The site there does not interfere with protected mangroves and is large enough for a 40,000 to 50,000 seat stadium with adequate parking and tailgating areas. It would sit on land just to the South of Arthur Lamb road and extend to near the beach and would be West of the Rickenbacker Causeway by 300 meters. Again there is no interference with the mangroves in this area and it would provide spectacular views of downtown Miami, Key Biscayne, Biscayne Bay and it would be next to the University of Miami's School of Marine Science.

David Beckham should go wild for this piece it's better than the Port site, more viable for other events and it will be next to a hopefully renovated Marine Stadium.

This site is being brought up for serious consideration, Key Biscayne will probably object but they have little too fall back on and they already have the tennis tournament there.

right next to the ******* plant...perfect!!

cant see any traffic issues there

That issue can be handled, there already offices nearby and beaches and it's almost one mile to the plant. Not an issue and if it were to be one it could be corrected. Great location for UM students, alumni, tropically scenic beyond belief. No interference with the mangroves and much of the area now is for parking.

I suggest that you take a look at Google maps and see how much land there is; a very viable site and much better than Tropical Park.

Look it's being considered whether it happens or not is another question but it can probably be done sooner than any other site.

traffic would be brutal to that site. you know how the rickenbacker backs up during the tennis tournament. i am just guessing on this but i would think twice as many cars for 45000 people than the tennis. um students could take shuttles over there but it would be pretty rough.

Fisher Island will have some say too....

you are dealing with Miami ( politics) and its hatred for anything positive that does not have a way to line some ones pocket it will be squashed

Port of Miami site would have no parking and minimal access. Night soccer games and/or football minimize the traffic and I agree it's an issue but such a wonderful, scenic location might be worth it. Other sites being looked at are downtown Miami,Tropical, North of Marlins Stadium and sites near I-195

When I first heard this was a possible site I discounted it but then I looked at Google Maps and saw the satellite photos that the area being talked about disrupts nothing, is a 100 acres of dirt and parking lots and is still almost a mile from the treatment plant. Traffic is an issue anywhere but it can be handled and this site would be an easy one to get done soon after Key Biscayne stops screaming. It's nowhere near Fisher Island and cannot be seen from Fisher Island. Again look at the satellite photos and all the dirt and parking lots......

Miami is current ranked 47th in the nation as far as ratio of public parks to city land and population density... The State is after the local government daily to try and find more private land to convert to additional parks. And the city also has a hard line stance on not being open to lose ANY more existing parks....

And from a traffic standpoint....one lane in...

I'd say there is 0% chance of this being a possibility.

Folks, it's not wetlands, it's not mangroves and it's not a park what it is is a 100 acres of dirt and parking lots begging to be developed. City of Miami brought it up as far as I know and it is viable and boy would a stadium there help recruiting. It would be the most scenic stadium in America.

When UM actually cares about football, we will have our own stadium. The bad news is That the stadium lease at SLS is for 30 years. The good news is that SLS won't be around for 30 or even 15 more years. Shalala won't be around at UM for another 15 years either.

Virgina Key has parking and is better than Dodge Island. But, I can't find any source for Virginia Key considering beckham's MLS Stadium. Virginia Key's "Friends of Miami Marine Stadium" has 2 years to raise $30M to restore and re-open it. Maybe if they could cut a deal with Beckham that could be a football, soccer and some how a Marine Stadium it would have a shot. I'm not a architect and have no clue if you could make a stadium that would work for all three. Also, there could be some MAJOR issues since National Trust for Historic Preservation, which has added the facility to its list of American architectural treasures

The city commission last year approved a plan by the nonprofit Friends group that would reopen the stadium as a self-sustaining event venue and public park for concerts, exhibitions, rowing regattas and triathlons — provided supporters can raise the money for renovation privately. The only public money would be $3 million from a Miami-Dade County historic-preservation fund.

It's astonishing the amount of money they've put in to SLS already and it's still a dump. It's equally astonishing they want to poor more money into SLS to make it "Super Bowl worthy." With any foresight at all, they would have built a brand new state of the art stadium in the parking lot and knocked SLS to the ground already.

I don't care if it's 35k, 40k or 50k....give me a small state of the art stadium and I'm all in.
