Um, except how many of those players that were suspended for the MD game and beyond were in his doghouse? And if that really was his way of dealing with it, he is even dumber than I thought, but I really dont think it was. He either didnt know it was going on or conveniently didn't know it was going on.

Lack of institutional control generally involves higher ranking school employees (compliance people, or a head coach, for instance) being aware of a problem and doing nothing about it, not having the proper steps in place to monitor these things, etc. Low ranking employees, like assistant coaches, acting on their own isn't really what LOIC is for.

This makes me wonder. What did Shannon actually DO about it? He apparently knew about it for years. Beyond verbally warning people, what did he do?

This is just a guess, but Hurtt going to Louisville probably was due to this, at least in part.

Hill and Panunzio stayed. I thought the HC had to get this stuff reported to the NCAA, not just move it up the line and throw your hands up (hey, I tried). How many people think Paterno's reporting it to the next guy up in the chain was good enough? Either you are in charge or you aren't. It amazes me that Shannon gets a free pass on this cause "he tried".

No coach,parent,AD, girlfriend,roomate or anyone else can keep tabs on another person 24/7. Shannon has many many faults for sure. But from all accounts so far it seems like he was the only one concerned about Shapiro to the point where he was warning players and staff. Bash him when it's time and give him credit when it's due.

Thank you. I'm glad people are finally discussing this and getting past the "Shannon ran Shapiro away from the program" meme. The freaking head of recruiting was taking loans from Shapiro and introducing recruits to him. Somehow Shannon was oblivious to all that while he was monitoring fan comments on internet message boards.

+1...while I'm glad he's gone from a football perspective, I really doubt he knew about the Shapiro stuff and I doubt he turned a blind eye. Apparently our compliance was good enough for Shapiro to want to fight the guy heading it up and RS gone on record numerous times for issuing warnings to stay away from the guy. Just wait to see what the NCAA says. Maybe I'll eat these words, but I really doubt Shannon knowingly had any knowledge of this stuff. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but most of this happened during the recruitment (which is a big no-no) of these guys, right? How is RS or any coach for that matter supposed to keep an eye on players not even on campus?

Am I the only one who does not fault Olivier Vernon for his comments? The dude was a 18 year old kid when the coaches at his college introduced him to a dude that threw bene's his way. Then a couple years later the University acts like he's a bad seed for taking bene's from said dude. Now he's trying to earn a job and is willing to speak in an effort to clear his name. I cannot fault him for any of this.

I do not fault the kids much if at all. I do not blame him for talking at all. Besides, it is a bunch of message board freaks that are making him out to be a bad seed not the university. He does not have a gag order on him. My beef is where in the **** is Shannon when this stuff is going home. I also believe the brunt of the punishment should be given to coaches on these things.
