Taking it on the chin early in game one as the defending champs put a 5-burger on the board in the 1st against Woodrey. To say the least, this is an uphill battle for our Canes going up against right hander Conor Jones, one of the best starters in college baseball. Of note, Morris took my advice and moved Heyward out of the 4-hole. Lopez hitting cleanup tonight. Maybe he can drop a couple of texas leaguers at least.

5-3 Virginia Bottom 6

Heyward hits a bomb following the Lopez weak double play grounder to the pitcher after a failed bunt attempt.

5-4

Abreu hustles to second on an error by the 3rd baseman. Beats the throw home on a Barr single to right.

That was just a silly decision to put a guy like Lopez in the cleanup role.

No reason to get cute.

Heyward wasn't protecting Collins. Lopez isn't a cleanup hitter, but we don't have a cleanup hitter.
You fix that by putting Collins in the 4 hole and maybe putting Abreu or even Michelangeli in the three hole so it forces the opposing pitcher to throw strikes to them out of the fear of Collins...that's what Don Mattingly has been doing with the Marlins and the one problem they don't have is scoring runs. Red Sox are doing that too with Bogaerts hitting in front of Papi. The hitter in the 3 hole just needs to hit for average and have gap power because you want run production from him.

No easy fix. Heyward needs to get it going. I really thought he was in for a big year.

I guess you have to give Morris his due because the stats don't correspond to the win/loss record. One big hitter, mediocre starting pitching, yet first place in the ACC and a top 5 RPI. It's like winning via smoke and mirrors.

We lose two games late, Garcia hasn't thrown the first pitch.

Morris does realize he has about 25 more games with this guy on the roster?

Mediavilla pitches a 1 hitter through 6, but leaves due to tightness in throwing shoulder. Bartow comes in and strikes out the side,
Michelangeli promptly hits a HR for a 4-0 CANES lead bot7.
