I personally never cared for the USF series. We really had nothing to gain at the time of signing the deal IMO, with much more to lose, but it's whatever at this point.

That game sealed Randy's fate but you are correct, the FSU game was really what set things in motion.

With all the huge differences between Randy and Golden's tenures, I would say one of the biggest ones is how we hit the field. Remember seemingly every week, sleep walking in the first quarter? It was never more evident than when we played FSU that night. We had the talent to beat them for sure, and they ******* steamrolled us because they were ready to cut throats.

Even when we have been out-talented the last couple years, at least we looked ready from an intensity standpoint. If our 2010 team had played with half the intensity the 2012 team FSU with, we would have pounded them.
 
If you were at that game like I was you knew the tide was turning for us and not in a good way. I think the announced attendance was 20k. There was NOBODY there. AND WE LOST. Donna had no choice. I will admit I was surprised they fired Randy. Although I was glad.

I think some of you forget that in 2007, USF was the #2 team in the country. We havent been in the top 5 in so long I have forgotten. (2005? maybe.) So lets not make it seem like scheduling them was like scheduling Savannah St. They also beat us head to head for a few recruits. (Mainly Kayvon Webster and Sam Barrington) They were turning the corner..Then obviously they got the big head and thought ANYBODY could come in and replicate what Jim Leavitt did. (Who by the way is on the San Fran 49ers staff now) The rest is history..

Consigliere, I do agree we need to end the contract. But dont end it just to add on Bethune Cookman or Northern Ark. Its just as pointless and as you saw on last Sat, the only people who suffer are the fans who waste the time to go out there only for the game to be over after the 1st qtr.
 
I never understood the thought about how scheduling is anything other than a good thing, unless you are giving up 2-for-1s or something like that. Like somehow playing a game against a team 'legitimizes' that team. I just don't buy it. People can look at the history of the schools and determine on their own which school has the legacy and which does not.

The USF series was a good series. It was a 3-for-2 with a BCS qualifier that is also in-state. It was a series that had the potential to allow a lot of fans from both schools to attend the games, whether at home or on the road.

The '10 game was a necessary 'surgery'. It was great to go to the '11 game and it's gonna be awesome going to the '13 game in a few days.

The problem I have with the USF scheduling, as Dan E. alluded to, was for us to have a "rival" game that would be like the UF-FSU annual game. That seemed like a slap in the face. USF isn't our rival. It looks like we are inferior to UF and FSU, while that is not simply the case. Paul Dee never went into these negotiations with the upper hand. He believed Miami was a worse brand that what we were. If we needed another game for Thanksgiving weekend, we should have scheduled Notre Dame at a neutral site or home and home, or Rutgers in Yankee Stadium. Something that would build our brand nationally rather than being a minor, regional "rivalry" game on Thanksgiving weekend.
 
The thing that makes me laugh are the people who say we have nothing to gain by scheduling USF and everything to lose. You sound like gators to me and validate the statement that the gators make when they say the same about us. Who cares what we have to gain by playing USF if we are going to replace them with savannah state or whatever crap team. If anything we can show local recruits how they will be embarrassed if they go there, just like FAU and FIU. Secondly, if they were to ever gain some national relevance whether we play them annually or not, they would provide that marquee in state replacement since UF won't play us. Now the chances of them ever reaching that level are slim, but just saying. We might not have anything to gain from them, but don't sound like a gator about the scenario.

Actually no and I stopped right here.

UF and Miami are established brands in the game. USF is not an established brand in the game and is not an established brand in the game. UM and UF are rivals with a history, USF is nothing and there is NO history.

When UF and UM play it is a big game because there is a history, bad blood and big time programs playing...fans of college football care.

When UM and USF play, outside of the schools fan base, no one cares because none of the above exists.

Big time programs and small programs want to play UF because of the above. UF stopped scheduling us because they are scared and that is the truth. We offer them a lot, especially south Florida recruiting. USF doesn't offer these same things or any level of them. USF doesn't have a stronghold on Tampa Talent/Recruiting or they aren't the controlling hand in the market (FSU and UF have more of a threat). So USF offers little to us so the reward sucks in general compared to the risk.

Playing USF does little for us and is not worth it. There is a big difference between playing a local school like FIU and FAU then playing USF.

I am not scared of USF, I just don't see the need to waste an out of conference game against them.

I remember sitting in the stands actually rooting for USF to win the game because I knew that was the only way Radio would definitely be fired.
 
I remember that day like yesterday.... it's the only day i've walked out of the stadium after a loss with a HUGE smile on my face. I knew Randy was gone after that game, and there was nothing that could bring me more joy at that moment in time. I will also hold a soft spot in my heart for USF, if it weren't for them, we might still be flailing around under corch.

If Jim Leavitt was still their coach at that time they probably would have been able to squeeze more out of that win than they actually did. I actually thought Shannon would get one more year considering he was given an extension that same season. It all worked out at the end for us.

Another year or two of Shannon and this program would have officially died especially with the NCAA stuff

That is the red herring, the extension (especially without knowing the terms) is not what you should be scared off. The buyout is what governs, the buyout can end the contract today. They can extend coach X to 2045, it doesn't matter if the buyout is pretty low.

Here is a good example:

Kirk Ferentz’s contract and his buyout clause.

The clause stipulates that if Ferentz is fired without cause by the university prior to Jan. 31, 2020, he will continue to get paid 75 percent of his remaining contract in monthly installments by the school. That means if he were to get fired today, Ferentz would get paid a little under a quarter of a million dollars each month to not coach until the beginning of 2020.

Looking at highlights go the team from those years is tough seeing radio on the side line arms forever closed

That game was the one time ever I was rooting hard for UM to lose. I knew if we lost, there would be a chance Shannon would be gone. I still remember reading the news on twitter that we had fired Shannon.

Tears of joy rolled down my face.
 
Its crazy how that one game put everybody on the same mindset that it was time for Randy Shannon to go.
