Upon Further Review: Jarrid Williams

This is what I think. But why oh why was Scaife playing G in spring?? We did the same thing to him last season, gave him no reps at tackle all spring/offseason and then kicked him out wide out of necessity mid-stream. Wtf are we thinking w/ Zion and Campbell and Herbert battling to be our starters at tackle?
Apparently campbell was looking good in the few practices they had and justice liked what he saw from him

I think it’s fairly apparent this kid is going to have to be our starting LT, unless he’s Tommy Kennedy 2.0, which clearly is not possible via the tape against good competition. I just don’t see how any other scenario unfolds, unless one of the young tackles develops into an all-ACC type player in one off-season, which I just can’t imagine happening.

So a line with Williams and Scaife as the bookends with Gaynor and the other 2 best on the interior has some promise. Nobody expects the 2018 OU line. But it really *should* be the best line we’ve had in the last few years.

He'll have to be our LT for at least the 1st couple games. I have a feeling that Walker and Rivers are going to adjust quickly and one may supplant Jarrid as the season goes on. Remember with King's ability to move in the pocket he makes up for the OL deficiencies.

This all assumes that he can learn LT - especially considering the limited practice time he's going to have.

I just don’t see them having Scaife at Guard during spring and just moving him to tackle when fall camp starts.. Nothing indicates them moving him to T... If Campbell stays healthy I think it’s him and Williams at Tackle, Scaife at G, Gaynor at C and the other G between Traore, Donaldson (if healthy), or Rivers...

No doubt it’s what looks likely. I did my best to be clear it’s what I would do and not something the coaching staff told me etc.

You did God's work here, Roffers.

I agree with pretty much everything you said here.

I'd like to think he's got a little more ceiling, but the safe bet is a nice average-ish starting tackle in the ACC.

Absolutely there are tails for the outcomes. It’s just generally a good bet to expect outcomes to lean towards the middle.

Give us five average starting OL and we will be a good offense this year (along with good health).

Do you have his pressure rate over his full 2018 and the four games from 2019 combined? Also, pressure rate versus the P5 opponents over that time?

There were 9 offensive tackles worse than Zion Nelson? Who are those guys jeez. I don’t fault Zion too much - came in worked his *** off to get bigger and the team didn’t put him in a position to succeed whatsoever. That being said, I cant fathom an offensive lineman having a worse season than him.

Luke Tenata- V Tech (224 snaps)
Jaylen Nichols- S Carolina (163 snaps)
Matthew Bergeron- Syracuse (191 snaps)
Ryan Swoboda- Virginia (222 snaps)
Silas Dzansi- V Tech (160 snaps)
Zach Quinney- G Tech (341 snaps)
Mike Lonsdorf- Rutgers (218 snaps)
Simi Moala- Utah (362 snaps)
Jaelyn Duncan- Maryland (382 snaps)

ACC offensive lines are SO BAD.

Don’t know and we haven’t heard the same regarding the o-line
Sure we have. Last spring/offseason it was how Barry's positive approach and rebuilding the confidence of our o-linemen was just what they needed after Searles and they were looking so much better. Normal offseason talk.

And I think the 1st two practices were no pads. Even the next 2 might have just been shells. Can't truly evaluate line play w/out pads.

Nice breakdown Lance.

From 247, the projected 2-deep for the OL is:

Left Tackle: Jarrid Williams, Issiah Walker or Kai-Leon Herbert

Left Guard: DJ Scaife, Jalen Rivers

Center: Corey Gaynor, Jakai Clark

Right Guard: Navaughn Donaldson, Cleveland Reed

Right Tackle: John Campbell, Zion Nelson or Kai-Leon Herbert

The best scenario for the future is that Nelson, Walker, and Rivers all redshirt. If they do, then that means our offensive line is holding it down. No pun intended.

Seems a bit off. Traore will be in the running for a spot at OG, and likely will land in the 2 deep. And heaven help us if that's the right side of the OL. Maybe Campbell improves his pass protection skills, and maybe Donaldson comes back healthy and lean, but those are two big "ifs". Rivers might step foot on campus and be our best RT (if Scaife is at OG). He and Walker will be in the two-deep.

Clark at backup C makes sense, but that doesn't mean they won't give him a look at RG, too. If he's our most consistent RG (coaches apparently thought he was last season), it doesn't make sense to sit him JIC you need him at OC. And if Gaynor goes down, you slide Clark over to C and bring in the 2nd team OG.

I hear ya. That 2-deep was from 247 Sports.

The staff was impressed with Campbell in the few Spring practices that took place. I think he's taking his game up a notch.

I caught that part, no worries. Wasn't trying to attribute it to you, but I probably should have been more clear by putting a "247 seems a bit off" in there.

Agree with you that if we can end up putting a RS on Rivers, Walker, and Nelson this season, then we had a solid OL and guys stepped up. It also means Jutice is the all-around monster many of us suspect he is.
