University financials FY24

What do you think are the biggest reason for these numbers?
1) UHealth

and

2) UHealth's positive knock-on effects to everything else.

My quick glance is ~$400MM+ just from that alone...probably more...

The CEO who ran all that...is now Presidente of the entire Universidado meng.

UM needs to go full UF/FIU and continue to expand campus, and admin buildings and take up real estate. The school is only going to get a bigger draw as more eyes are on them and they are in a place now when applications are going to come in hotter than ever. With the amount of companies that are coming down to south Florida, more chances to get graduates into blue chip jobs. Get more kids in, build up the career connections, keep getting doner money and expanding UHealth and keep pumping the football team now while the money is here. This school can legitmately become an NYU-regarded academic institution with solid career paths, with the reach and athletic profile of Notre Dame, with a sprawled out pseudo campus of a large public school. They have the profile and money now to do it.

Well said Johnny.

Funny thing is the hospital makes a lot more than $400M….the hospital actually transfers a ton of money to the rest of the school. The left column other expenses goes to the right column as other revenue. Some is central services, but a lot is just straight financial support to offset losses.

For some reason that's never been the ambition; they've had their chances to be landlords all over the Gables and Downtown for years and never really capitalized on it. The enrollment is not going north of where it is now and, in truth, I'm quite sure they'd prefer it be less. They would far sooner raise tuition than enrollment.

Miami is a boutique private University built around an international brand with State School resources. They want the best of everything without being anywhere near the biggest, and they can do that because their profits aren't based on enrollment.

Can we just code Miami Football as an Inpatient Clinic?

No, health system was profitable before he got there and has only grown. The primary change that drove the increased margin , combining the hospital licenses, happened well before he arrived. He does enjoy taking credit for it though.

I believe we have done a lot better in collections too, though, and that is under Joe's leadership. Deloitte.

Ain't no where to go. Maybe the small business area across Red Road on US1. Maybe some stuff across US1, but everything is taken. And those residents ain't being forced out.

I have a kid at each school and Notre Dame’s academic profile is a little better than NYUs. UM appears to be following NYUs playbook at a much smaller scale. Their revenue is 17B.

So make a UM north campus and get a space in Brickell/Downtown like FIU did. Make a University of Miami West/South. **** make a campus in Broward. The school should look into increasing their footprint that way. They already did with the medical and marine science school. FIU has a campus in Islamorada and Northwestern Kellogg has an EMBA school in Coral Gables

I agree, they’ve shown that time and time again. Doctors hospital, the now red road commons that was served on a silver platter. Even Sunset Place would have been cheap real estate for the school to purchase and it’s a catty corner from campus. I’m not sure who has made these decisions but the school can be a powerhouse in size if they just made the common sense decision

Not really….like I said, had little to do with Joe. A lot of things have come together over last 10 years to turn around the health system. In order I’d say, combining the licenses of the three hospitals under Sylvester, the ACA expanding 340b to specialty hospitals, and hiring Steve Nimer to run the cancer center.

So do we give Shalala any props? Asking for a friend.
