Unfortunate news regarding Malek Young

View as article
I feel horrible for the kid. Malik always will be 100% Cane and part of the brotherhood for life. Kid gave it all to this program. I hope he will be able to walk and move around normally. He will finish his education here and go on to great things. Prayers for him and his family.

Could not have said it any better. Let's go win the ACC for Malik this year. Cane fam will be praying

I am so sorry to hear about Malek. Last May I had a spinal abscess surgery and I was told to focus on getting myself healthy first starting with the physiotherapy and occupational therapy. As a result; I am on way to have my normal life. Malek can and will do it as long as he is a young, athletic person.

Really? Wow. I was going by a good friend that is a neurosurgeon that spoke very highly of Kaplan. My boy (ironically) had to quit football at Dook over his own spinal issues. I'll obviously defer to your opinion here though since you've seen the entirety of the team's care in person.

A doctor I saw back home also knew Kaplan and spoke highly of him, but many players have to refered to him as “the butcher” for not doing a good job with their ACL surgeries. Vinny Scavo the head athletic trainer is a whole other story

If it’s that much of a concern you have a moral obligation to go to coach Richt, not sure what purpose this serves on a public forum.

You’re also exposing yourself legally since you’re using you’re actual name. Not trying to be a prick, but this is a serious matter that needs to be looked at by people that can make informed sound judgements and have medical knowledge and backgrounds.

Just my 2 cents since you brought it up.

For clarity and peace of mind, Young Pennyfinger has not exposed himself to any sort of legal liability here. Put that nonsense back in your ***, right where you pulled it from. Let the man express himself, offer his insight, even if it's not all plush kittens and double rainbows.

Austin, is Kaplan's questionable locker room reputation the only shortcoming you were referring to?

The athletic training staff (sports medicine) has a pretty bad reputation among the players, as far as doctors some aren't highly regarded but there's others that are good

Makes sense. D-Owens ain't suppose to be running like that after his ACL injury. I always found it weird why he ran like that after the injury.

Many of you know how I've been a big fan of Malek. This ****ed up my night, but glad to know he's looking at it positively. And, controlling what he can control.

It may seem like little consolation now but in instances like this we should be glad that the program is attached to some of the better team doctors in the country. Hopefully this is something that at worst just ends the kid's contact sports career.

If you saw some of the things first hand you’d think otherwise

So Richt just puts up with sub par medical care and says nothing?

This is the juju we receive for those who made fun of Randy Russell's injury (if there were any).

Getting Campbell and Surtain just become x10 times more important we are without a doubt going to end up with Bethel. sigh.

There's always going to be a self-styled "truth-teller" jacka$$ who feels compelled to attack Canes fans for non-existent "making fun of another team's player" nonsense.

Seriously, why don't you just quit this board and join another, as you are SOOOOOOO concerned with the horrible things that UM fans are not saying.

Very sad. Is there more info? Did he get paralyzed?

Should name it the "Malek Young Tunover Chain and retire it to the HOF, and get a new one for this season.

I think it should be named after him, and awarded to a player with most turnovers created at the end of the season. Tradition here.

I am happy the injury is not debilitating or crippling. The man is young, and can have a long healthy life with proper medical and conditioning care. While not on the field, he can have an impact on the game in many other ways, should he choose so. Amen.

I love his enthusiasm on field, it is contagious, and he will be missed. Then again, football is such a small part of life in perspective, I believe the Lord has his reasons, which I don’t need to know, except that MY has a healthy, productive life.

I pray for his strength an a “chin up” attitude in life.

Really hope the guy finishes up well with a degree and has a good, long productive life. Would love to see him leading warmups or pregame huddles. He gotta get the first turnover chain next season, too

Deeply sad news for the young man, but fortunately the people at Jackson detected this injury before anything really tragic happened, like a hit leading to permanent paralysis. 25 years ago, this might have gone undetected.

Now he’ll at least be able to get his full education at the U and graduate.
