UM's Budget

If 60,000 fans can come and support the football team for the season with an average ticket price let's say $79 just ticket sales.

7 home games $33,180,000

8 home games $37,920,000

Comparing Texas, Ohio state, and some of the other super large universities to UM is pointless. Those schools have 50K+ under grad and have for decades. Those are new york yankees/Man.-U sized fan bases. If UCF keeps winning BCS games, you'll see them jump way up that list. UCF = fastest growing university for like a decade straight. approaching 50K total undergrad enrollment.

Oh - UM = 14K undergrad enrollment

I was not comparing miami to texas I was using texas because of the fan support $34 million in ticket sales

UM spends about the same as FSU on football (even taking out scholarship costs, since UM tuition is higher). Next fallacy...

And how many other sports programs does Texas have? What were their expenses?

Miami starts getting 18 mil a year just for being in the ACC. This school pays what it pays b/c it doesn't give a **** how good the program is as long as kids behave.

Again, full of crap. We pay Golden more than Oregon pays Helfrich. We pay Golden as much as Auburn pays Malzahn. We pay Golden just a couple hundred K less than FSU pays Jimbo Fisher.

YEah, clearly the UM admin doesn't care.

What a effing joke.

Auburn took a risk hiring Malzan, and it is typical for first time HCs (at the Div 1 level), to make less, prove themselves and then restructure. Btw AU is still paying Chiziks salary.

For example Jimbo, who was hired as a coordinator, proved his worth, got a raise. Then proved an even higher value and NOW MAKES OVER FOUR MILLION. You think Malzan isn't getting a restructured deal after this?

Miami still hasn't figured out you can't gamble on unproven guys to avoid paying. Pay upfront and get a real coach. Three hires in a row they have gone with the riskier, cheaper hire.

Do you understand how idiotic what you just posted sounds?

Jimbo had no HC experience before taking the job at FSU. Many people though the "HC in Waiting" gig was a huge failure, and that he wasn't allowed to do anything under Bowden other than sit and watch. So they give him the HC job and a decent salary (think he was around 2.25 to start), and as he's proven himself, he's gotten a couple raises, and is now at 4.1 mil.

Malzahn was a gamble at Auburn that apparently paid off. They'll be upping his salary after this year for sure.

There are literally dozens of other programs that have taken the same approach--hire a coordinator or unheralded small-timer at a moderate rate and if he performs, up his pay. Look at Richt at UGA. Or Dabo Swinney. Or Charlie Strong. And on and on.

That is the exact path that UM has taken with the past couple of hires.

There are only a small handful of school who can afford to START the bidding for a coach at more than 3-4 mil. And UM obviously isn't one of them

So much is wrong here I don't know where to bnegin.

First off, we're not going to have 8 home games in a 12 game season. We'll have 6-7.

Second, tickets do not average $79. More like half that.

Third, ain't no way we'll average 60k fans per game. We're lucky to average 50k tickets sold, and many of those at reduced rates or as promotional giveaways (eg, we gave away 15k tickets or so to UM staff for a game this year, just to try to get some butts in the stands).

Malzahn already signed a new contract about a month ago upping his salary.

How do I know this? It's public information. Every coed postsecondary institution that participates in federal student aid programs must, pursuant to the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act, submit financial information every year to the U.S. Department of Education. The required information is itemized and fairly detailed.

I've posted about this many times. Recently, in another thread, "People love to perpetuate that UM athletics has no money, but that's simply not true. Revenues are up 69% from 2004 ($39,755,862) to the year that ended May 31, 2013 ($67,253,273). The average head coach (among all men's sports (6)) made $104,733 in 2003. That average is up to $761,608 for the latest year - FSU's is $812,977 btw."

UM's football revenues and expenses from 2003 to 2012 (2012 fiscal year for Miami AD ended May 31, 2013).

Good info. From what I can see, we're clearing a profit of about 5-6 mil on average. I'm guessing that some of that profit goes to support other sports. Some of it is likely invested in future upgrades. Not sure how much of that we could feasibly use to pay a coach.

In contrast to FSU, that's not much profit. I see they cleared 20 mil last year, 12 mil the year before, 17 mil the year before....

Correction, UCF has eclipsed 50K Undergrad. However OSUck has under 50K (43K) undergrad at their C-Bus campus. UT Austin is under 40K in undergraduates enrolled.

UM has just under 10K in undergraduates.

Answer: Priorities.

And football isn't one. Building the medical school reputation, however, is.

That's idiotic. Athletic departments are self funded. Academic dollars aren't diverted to sports anywhere.

The answer to your question is us. He fans don't support the program financially or on game day like our competition does. We have 6500 Hurricane Club members. That's up from 4500 recently. Teams like UF and Bama have 10x that. And their boosters donate 10x. Add in ticket sales, and all the game say ancillaries, and that's the answer.

**** anyone who points the finger away from the fanbase.

If football is a priority, as you infer, then where is the effort to build a stadium in town? Sorry, buddy, but The U will never get the Hurricane Club/booster support required to build a new stadium. The alumni base is too small for that level of financial support, which is why football is not a priority to the administration. Otherwise, you would have already seen an effort to build a stadium somewhere in Miami. The school figures it can make much more money off medical R&D.

And athletic departments do TRY to self fund. However, most athletic departments receive subsidies from the institution and/or state support. This link shows revenue, expenses and subsidies for the athletic departments that report such info. http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/college/story/2012-05-14/ncaa-college-athletics-finances-database/54955804/1 Only the largest 9 state school programs don't operate with subsidies and almost all of those are Big 10 or Big 12 programs...not SEC. Miami can certainly afford to pay a top tier coach or build a small stadium, even if that means subsidizing with endowment money. However, The U has proven time and time again that it is not willing to make that kind of commitment...because football is not a top priority.

Donna will support football to a degree, but most people know her baby is the future of the UM medical program. After all, she was the Secretary of Health and Human Services for 8 years.
