Why is UM's athletic budget considerably smaller than most major programs?

I understand that UM is a small private school, but they're still bringing in the dough. Miami recently completed a massive $100M+ hospital in downtown.

I understand that our ticket sales are crap, but how much money do college football programs really make from ticket sales? The "brand" is still one of the most popular in the country. It seems like the ACC has increased their TV revenue recently, but our budget remains the same.

Answer: Priorities.

And football isn't one. Building the medical school reputation, however, is.

I understand priorities. But ****, we can't afford $6.5M/year to hire quality coaches?

HC $3M
OC $1M
DC $1M

Divide the remaining $1.5M amongst the position coaches. That's about $220k/year for each assistant.

At one point Coker was one of the highest paid coaches in college football. I think they will shell out if they have to. But why pay Golden more than 2.3 million? He was an up and comer ... they don't go from 500K to 5 mil with one promotion. If he stayed long enough and won championships MIami would pay him ... maybe not what a Texas or OSU could, but few can compare with that.

Miami's budget is find. Every sports team tries to "cook" their books. There are only a few places where the money is so large they can't hide it like Texas.

Also remember that Gruden interviewed and considered taking the position. I doubt that was for less than 4 million a year.

Last year Texas had income of $109 million; no other team made more than $90 million. The biggest source of revenue was ticket sales, which contributed $34.5 million last season, an increase of more than $2 million from the previous year. Texas football also collected $30 million from contributions and another $15 million from Big 12 and NCAA distributions.

The University of Miami Football team in Coral Gables, Florida made the following profit:
Mens Team:
Expenses: $24,414,086, Revenue: $26,205,317, Profit: $1,791,231

Texas is a monster. No one compares. We don't need UT's budget, but at least something closer to FSU's budget.

Where did you get the Miami numbers from?

Canes fans need to support the team

What fans? We got a bunch of bandwagon message-board All-Americans who won't get off their azzes to go to games, won't donate anything to the athletic department, but still love to complain and act as if UM owes them something.

U can't compare to a state schools budget. Apples to oranges IMO

Budget will be higher this time around. Reasons are multiple. No longer paying for Perry Clark, Larry Coker, Randy Shannon. Momentum 2 campaign. New ACC contract. No buyout for Al Golden.

And how many other sports programs does Texas have? What were their expenses?

Miami starts getting 18 mil a year just for being in the ACC. This school pays what it pays b/c it doesn't give a **** how good the program is as long as kids behave.

Again, full of crap. We pay Golden more than Oregon pays Helfrich. We pay Golden as much as Auburn pays Malzahn. We pay Golden just a couple hundred K less than FSU pays Jimbo Fisher.

YEah, clearly the UM admin doesn't care.

What a effing joke.

I think UM should be in pretty good shape to put together a deal for a football coach and staff. New ACC TV contract money, done paying Coker and settlement with Shannon. Season tickets sales were also up last season. Let's also not forget the revenue that basketball brought in last year, which is a rarity. If Golden leaves, UM needs to bring in a name that keeps the fan base excited about where the program is headed. Great recruiting class, more Ws this year than last year and a better future schedule.
