Great to see Maury back, and a nice bounce back from Gates.

Defense is getting to be a concern. Zamora’s lack of progression defensively from last year has been a disappointment.

Agree. Isn’t there anyone on the bench that can push for playing time....or is Zamora all we have.

Not really. Paige is probably the natural replacement from a defensive standpoint, Escala from an overall standpoint. Ultimately, Zamora’s bat is too valuable to sit no matter how frustrating he may be defensively.

I am as concerned with the outfield. Tuero can hit but his fielding is horrendous. It's almost as if he's not seeing the ball on routine pop ups.

What position did Del Castillo play in HS? Tuero at DH vs RHP would be preferable if Del Castillo has any defensive skills at all.

God our defense is awful.

You would think Gino would hold to the Fraser Philosophy:

1. put the fastest offense on the field that you can find, one that can hit and run, steal bases, and manufacture runs

2. put the fastest defense on the field that you can find, one that can cover ground and play error free

3. Have pitchers that throw good breaking balls, and don't walk anyone.

Seems to have worked well for UM for 40 years.

The defensive woes go hand in hand with our lazy recruiting philosophy. We go after travel ball heroes who can hit. Period. We stopped trying to identify real baseball players.

Ah the fresh smell of revisionist history.

I looked back at Fraser's defense and compared them to our recent teams. I stopped at 7 years because any more would be overkill (and I'm tired).

Average Fielding %
2012-2018: .9693%
1986-1992: .9686%

Through 17 games this year: .9651%

We also have 4 errors committed by pitchers.

Nobody does things better than dead legends. They're the best. Unfortunately, a lot of it is myth-making.

No one looks at fielding percentage anymore. That’s a dead statistic. Balls that you don’t even get to because you’re not that good are never errors. Ever.
