We're going to be very frustrated on offense this year seeing glimpses, knowing what the offense is capable of doing, but generally being herky jerky because their playcaller doesn't have a clear baseline.

If we had even a decent defense this offense would be looked at so differently.

With our defense, it's like they have to be perfect.

RB checkdown pass is open on nearly every pass play but isn't being used even just to keep kstate honest.

It's pure genius to resort to resort to trick plays when the opponent hasn't demonstrated they can stop your base stuff.

Actually, I guess the finesse sideaways plays are our base.

Exactly.

This is exactly Fisch's problem. He thinks he's playing video games. Completely out thinks himself. People will focus on the obviously ****ty defense. But, they're going to be ****ty anyway. The offense has a chance to do some things. At least against a team like Kstate.

It's not just Fisch. I've seen this sickening tendency more and more in modern football. The young assistants didn't grow up with Lombardi or the early '70s Dolphins. They have no concept of hitting anybody on offense, to establish the identity of your team on both sides of the ball. Instead they spend the entire offseason drawing up cutesy plays and envisioning nothing but open space. There's zero comprehension of situational impact, that what you are drawing up will thrive against one level of opponent but be massacred elsewhere.

Power football is still available in college. Every time we line in in base I formation or one back set we look dangerous. Once it's the shotgun I expect a pathetic call. The NFL has legislated in favor of an extreme pass oriented approach, and it's difficult to uproot massive talented defensive linemen, but in college you can still blend power with creative offshoots. Fisch expects all the tricky stuff to work even though he hasn't established anything in terms of base sets or power.

I do like that we are exploring the middle of the field much more frequently. And we have a handful of very talented skill guys.
