I've seen it and heard it from so many people and that's that the Miami fans and Internet posters are more negative than other schools. I believe it's true and time for a change; we have a lot to be positive about.
Take Miami's facilities, after a little more than a decade and $100 million dollars the facilities at the University of Miami are, in many areas, better than Florida's and Florida State's. It's too bad many of our own fans don't realize this and also that more improvements are coming. It's important that recruits know that this is the new "U" and Miami is competitive in many ways including being the top rated academic school in Florida, having the first medical school in Florida. We don't have Nike's Phil Knight to fund our athletic program but we're in the top 10%.
True, the state schools may have Olympic sports and facilities we don't offer but we're talking football, basketball and baseball here. Oh, if you're into rowing Miami does have great facilities....
The Bank United Center (10,000 full capacity when final seats are added with 25 luxury suites) is as nice or nicer than either Florida's or Florida State's arena. Remember that the Bank United Center has modern offices for basketball, training rooms and weight rooms. Rumor is that there will be a new scoreboard with 4 new high definition screens coming soon to go with the existing larger high definition screen. Additionally, Donna Shalala built the Fieldhouse attached to Bank United Center and there are two practice courts there plus a large meeting room for banquets.
The new "Schwartz Center" training rooms, locker rooms, academic study areas, medical facilities and player's lounge(s)are at least as nice as the other two schools and the weight room is superior. There are two large auditoriums in the athletic facilities plus meeting rooms for various position squads.
The Athletic Department is building a "training table" dining hall for athletes that will be incredibly nice and it should open by football season. A new state-of-the-art artificial practice field is being installed soon at over million dollars. True, Miami doesn't have an indoor facility but Miami won 5 National Championships without one and has the best weather in the world, it's not essential.
Sun Life Stadium doesn't have the best sight lines but the fact is that it has hosted numerous national championship games and Super Bowls, has great locker rooms and facilities and is probably going to get a $400 million dollar facelift soon. The playing field and scoreboards are excellent and blow the antiquated Ben Hill Griffin stadium away.
I really hope Miami fans get positive, it's been a decade of negativity (sometimes understandable given the circumstances of Coker, Shannon and Shapiro) but it's time to be positive. The 4 and 5 star recruits should be begging Al Golden for scholarships. Just the opinion of a fan....
