The success of a position coach in college football is judged in two phases.
Consistent on-field production and the ability to consistently recruit at a high level.
New Miami Hurricanes running backs coach
Kevin Smith checks both boxes.
Smith, who is 35 years old, has been a college coach since only 2017 and he has already amassed a strong resume at both FAU and Ole Miss.
During his first season at FAU, Smith coached star back
Devin Singletary, who ran for 1,918 yards and 32 touchdowns while catching 19 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown. Singletary followed that season up in 2018 with 1,348 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. He went on to be selected in the third round of the 2019 draft by the Buffalo Bills.
Kerrith White was also selected in the 2019 NFL Draft, in the seventh round by the Chicago Bears, after rushing for 866 yards and eight touchdowns in 2018 as a complementary back to Singletary.
Smith followed coach
Lane Kiffin from FAU to Ole Miss and at the SEC level, he showed the ability to split carries between a talented backfield and recruit well.
Ole Miss featured a rushing attack that averaged 217 yards per game in 2021, which ranked 12th best in the country. The Rebels featured three backs that all ran for at least 550 yards and averaged at least five yards per carry in
Jerrion Ealy (770 yards, five touchdowns),
Snoop Conner (651 yards and 13 touchdowns), and
Henry Parrish (551 yards and three touchdowns).
From a recruiting perspective, Smith landed four four-star prospects from the South Florida area in WR
Bralon Brown, RB
Henry Parrish, ATH
Marc Britt, and CB
Markevious Brown.
Just before he departure from Ole Miss, Smith landed a commitment from talented transfer
Zach Evans, a former five-star recruit at the high school level.
With the state of Florida loaded with running back talent for the upcoming 2023 cycle, it will be an opportunity for Smith to establish himself as a formidable recruiter now that he is at Miami.
