Type of fan

The line between homer and realist is just as thin as the line between realist and mope. I consider myself cautiously optimistic. I have hope for the miracles and or best case scenarios when it comes to the canes.

ex. I allowed myself to believe there was a chance that TC and PS2 would be canes after the video with Nesta at their OV surfaced. However, I didn't melt down when they went elsewhere and claim storm18 was a failure.

I think the Oline is something to worry about and Malik is a liability at QB, but I hope they get their **** together and do well enough to get us in the ACCCG where we have a puncher's chance at knocking off a more experienced very tough Clemson team.

So depending on the time of day/topic I can either be a homer or realist but always do my best to avoid mope territory unlike many on this board.

100% agreement. I think cautious optimism and a fair recognition of strengths/weaknesses of your team is the essence of being a "realistic fan." The word fan, itself, connotes some degree of love/devotion to the object of your fandom, so I don't think you can be a fan and be completely devoid of optimism for your team.

I don't mean to fan the flames but I'd like to thank OP for giving me something complex and challenging to think so deeply about so early this morning.

I'm torn between the choices so now I have to go look myself in the mirror and ask: Am I a homer fan or a realist fan???

I'm a realist. I understand how college football works, what realistic expectations are and they way the recruiting game works.
That does not make me a pessimist. I try to separate what happened under other coaches with what's happening now and am completely aware that Miami was not relevant at all in college football for over a decade, regardless of what some fans think and this turnaround is nowhere near as easy as some people think it should be.

The worst fans are the ones who consider themselves to be realistic but continuously flip out every time a player they want signs with another school. If you honestly believe that Miami should sign every single 4 and 5 star prospect they target, you live in Homer-land.
