Those guys failed because they lacked physical tools. They tested as below-average athletes and played like it. The absence of raw talent hurt them much more than any transition to LB.Mike Smith? No
De’Andre Wilder? Wasn’t he a full time rusher in HS too? I know he got injured but we didn’t hear much from him even before that unfortunate event.
Terry McCray? Absolutely not
Travis Williams? Psh
No testing numbers or camps, which is part of the reason he never blew up. I suspect he would've tested through the roof.Any testing numbers or anything for this kid? Also was he hurt as a Junior? The JR stats are mediocre is why I ask. Any stats for his Senior season listed anywhere?

He also missed time as a junior for fighting. He is a former 189-pound wrestler with a temper.
Got it. I still think we can do better but it is what it is at this point.
Brooks is a fair example. I think he was a good take and will be a good player. He played with a bad foot injury this year which slowed him down. But he’s still TBD.Went back and saw what was said about Brooks earlier this yr during the off season. It was reported he was the “twitchiest” off all the LBs.
U brought out excellent examples, and I’m not sure y this staff won’t recruit true LBs. Rumph gets heat, but our LBing is a mess, too. Brooks is a rush end, not a guy u put in space....hence all that twitch that was reported looks like bull chit.
Tyler is a rush end; I just watched 3:33 of highlights & all of them is of him crowding the L.O.S, going up field or crashing down. He’s using DL moves! So now we’re going to have this kid in open space??
I’ve seen Brooks struggle. I’ve seen his ups & downs. My man should be used like Mack, not like Roquan Smith!
You know the answer to that question.Brooks is a fair example. I think he was a good take and will be a good player. He played with a bad foot injury this year which slowed him down. But he’s still TBD.
The other guys are bad athletes. McCray ran a 4.92 with a 65 SPARQ. Smith ran a 4.86 with a 72 SPARQ. Wilder weighed 189 pounds with a 79 SPARQ. They failed because they didn’t have that much talent.
Branden Jennings was a high school linebacker. So were Steed and McCloud. Meanwhile, the top LBs in the upcoming draft played DE, WR and QB. It’s a tricky position to project.
Tyler is a take because he’s a strong, quick, mean and explosive athlete. He tosses Armella like a ragdoll. He changes directions. The coaches saw him play LB up-close at camp and loved his movement.
Will he translate? Will he be coached up? All fair questions. But don’t write the guy off just because he played the same high school position as Micah Parsons, Kenneth Murray and Rashaan Evans.

I'm not saying Tyler is this guy, but here is another South Florida pass rusher with similar movements. Shannon turned him down because he didn't want any more rush-end conversions:
