  • Safety depth was minute with the 2006 Hurricanes, with the squad carrying just 4 players

  • The 2025 Hurricanes have the highest blue chip total of any squad in the last twenty years. It presently rises from 42 in 2024 to 54 this year
  • The 2006 Hurricanes had 46 blue chip players, which was the high water mark for the program until the 2021 season
  • This year's total signing class is the most weighted towards blue chips of any class in the last twenty years as well at 67%. The closest previously were the 2023 and 2007 classes (58%). Last year was 43% by comparison
  • The 2006 Hurricanes signing class had a blue chip ratio of 43%
  • Attrition to date going into the 2025 season has been lower than previous years with 28 outgoing players, again reflecting the youth of the overall team last year

The defense was still high caliber. It was the last defense for many years to have a low PPG average.

The true Achilles heel for the offense was lack of depth at WR. Going into a season with just six true wide receivers is mind boggling. Let's say Miami won the first game and beat FSU. They would have gotten off to a 6-1 and still been ranked. But even here, they would have broken down.

By Week 8, Miami was down to just 3 wide receivers. The Canes went 1-4 the rest of the way.

Yep, because Coker's WR recruiting had gone:

2002: Akieem Jolla, Ryan Moore, Sinorice Moss
2003: Darnell Jenkins
2004: Lance Leggett, Khalil Jones
2005: None
2006: Sam Shields, George Robinson

Five wide receivers over four recruiting classes. That's how you wind up with Monroe at wide receiver.

I did a separate post on this a few years ago, in that the echoes of this recruiting failure actually echoed onward for over a decade. To make up for the recruiting deficiencies of the previous years, Shannon signed six wide receivers in 2008. That made it extremely hard to recruit the position in 2009 and 2010 because there was such a log jam of talent. That in turn led to Al Golden having to sign five wide receivers in the 2012 cycle. It wasn't until afterwards that we were finally able to get back into a normal talent inflow at the position.
