Tuesday morning practice notes

I'm a little nervous at them trying JaQuan at LB since he goes 5'10"/190 lbs. Seems like Carter would be a more likely choice.

Its basically a 4-2-5.

Not to pick directly at you 252, but can we all just start calling it Nickel? I mean that is what every football team calls it, so maybe we can too? Kills me to see dudes constantly posting that. Its not a new defense, its nickel.

Actually it is basically a 4-2-5. What do you think grace was playing? He wasnt playing a traditional 4-3 sam role. Grace was being used as a rover.

Diaz did the same thing at miss st last year. He took a safety who was around 205-210 and made him the "sam" in his scheme.

Agreed. Even though Grace's responsibilities were more consistent with a rover or strong safety, the staff still referred to him as SAM so it's all just subjective terminology.

Just means they plan on running a lot more 4-2-5. Grace wouldn't have come off the field. Johnson can most definitely play SAM against the spread. I like this move quick honestly.

Ready to see willis. From spring through fall i have consistently been seeing that dude had multiple sacks and tfls.

Same. Maybe he's special. Among the holdovers I'm always dubious when the board tries to pretend those players are suddenly far superior to anything they've ever shown.

Im just happy the board hasn't started the annual infighting, backbiting, and bickering . . . yet. It gives me something to look forward to!

Are best old defenses had 2 OLBs who could have been safeties -- small fast hard hitters like Smith and Jessie. They were called 4-3. Does this name really matter. We will have faster guys playing closer to the LOS and attacking instead of backing up and looking around for keys. DT's need to collapse middle of pocket and DEs need to flush QBs. The other guys, LBs or whatever you call them, need to clean up what gets by. Simple fast and violent. Old school Cane defense.
