Transfer Portal watch

More:

Albany defensive end transfer Jared Verse has been generating a ton of college interest since entering the portal.

Schools like USC, Florida State, Tennessee, Texas, LSU, Florida, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and multiple others have offered the No. 6 ranked transfer in the 247Sports Transfer Rankings.

Verse told InsideTheU on Friday night that a decision could be coming this week - as soon as Wednesday - and that he's been narrowing down his college choices by calling coaches and thanking them for their interest. He's down to "five or six" schools.

The 6-foot-4, 247-pounder said that Miami remains in the mix and that he's still regularly communicating with Mario Cristobal, Dennis Smith, and other members of UM's staff at this point. He spoke highly of Cristobal.

"He's probably the one I've been talking to most," Verse said.

The FCS standout has a final official visit to use, but he's not planning on taking advantage of that. He's deferring to online presentations and describes this as a "football decision."

We will keep monitoring the situation here over the coming days considering Verse said he plans on trying to eliminate a school a day so that he could come to a conclusive decision. Verse collected 9.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss in 2021.
Hmmmm Dennis Smith reference. Correct me if I’m wrong but this would mean he’s in an on field role right?

He could have been given on field title temporarily until Mario announces all the positions (like he did with Pata and other analysts).

Who is Dennis Smith? What’s his role? Or old role?

Honest question, which I hope does not get me killed here:

Mario is insisting on elite HS recruits. He might have even passed on Carswell, Ibieta, and Medlock, even though we barely had a class. Now in the portal we seem to be after a lot of G5 and FCS guys. Even Lichtenstein, I have high hopes for him, but is he elite? Is it just a different approach in the portal?

There’s a difference between a high school player that’s never played a down of college football player and a P5/G5 that’s played 1 or more seasons, amassed hours of tape against college players, and has stats to back up his production.

If you’re getting an 3-4 end that had 30 tackles and 4 sacks of production then you’re usually looking at a kid that’s gonna be drafted late. He is probably banking on doing better being 2 years removed from injury.

And who has had 2 or 3 years to physically mature in a college S&C program.

I think it just underlines just our pathetic situation in the front 7. Lichtenstein in all reality is a depth guy at best, but that where we are. Did anyone actually look at our depth chart in the front 7? It’s terrible, especially at DE.

Thing is who the **** is available? Also he stuck with the roster he was dealt with.

Facts people have over hyped this front 7, its garbo its been that way. If anyone paid attention u could see this happening three years ago with the misses and the weird Jordan Miller diamond in a rough takes.

People think these under the radar guys are hidden gems. But they are under the radar cause the radar can't pick them up. We been getting scrubs for awhile and this is the outcome of those scrubs. Manny was a terrible recruiter he was damaging the roster for years. Golden recruited better than his *** and he missed a ton of dudes.

At some point we're going to miss out on transfers the longer this staff finalization takes. Not saying it's ultimately a bad thing that other teams are grabbing guys (maybe we want or don't want) but these transfers need to be developed and want to see coaches in place. It's easier to sell recruits all the promises and tradition, but these already-established guys aren't walking into a place without a staff being set. FSU's transfers aren't great, but they've got six already so they're ahead of the game just snagging bodies. Pitt just snagged a freshman All-american WR from Akron, hopefully we get a move on soon.
