Totally and completely OT: Is this spouse worth $36 BILLION dollars?

Whether you agree with it or not, the concept behind marital property is not that the spouse contributed at all to the business. The logic behind it is that if the other spouse wasn't taking care of everything else like the house and kids, etc, then they wouldn't have had the time to invest into the business to have gotten it where they did.

While the billions in this case makes it sound ridiculous, there is definitely some validity to that. I have my own law practice and while my wife has never contributed a thing to the business itself or helped me practice law, unquestionably I could not do what I do if she wasn't taking care of the house and mainly the kids every day. I just wouldn't have the time. So I get it. Don't like it? Get a prenup!

Just another indication of our arcane system of looking at the sexes, and sometimes it’s the man that gets the raw end of the deal. I’m sure he doesn’t care, because he has billions anyway in the other 75%. But for the rest of us schlubs, it sure doesn’t seem right.

Here honey take half of everything I’ve earned, take half of my net worth. Doesn’t matter if it’s male or female. It’s just not right.

But it doesn't have anything to do with taking care of kids or cooking meals or cleaning the house. I'm not a lawyer so please forgive me if I make a mistake.
Marital assets are split in half. If while the duration a marriage you acquire $10M of worth, the spouse is entitled to half ($5M) barring any prenup stipulations or premarital assets.

I disagree. Sorry. Finishing a competitive PhD now and married while also working and I still make time to cook, get groceries, do trash etc, laundry, take on the majority of the bills, and make consistent time for my wife. If my wife (whom I love) wanted to divorce me, the fact that she would get half when I have been supporting her, going to school, also doing things around the home, doing my PhD, etc would be nothing short of repulsive.

There needs to be a more sophisticated option as an intermediate to a prenup and typical marriage.

His wife built 1/2 of Amazon. Im surprised it was only $35B. Supposedly the NDA portion has more in-kind value.

Eddie Murphy did a hilarious routine on this very subject. It was either on "Delirious" or "Raw". Pretty sure the latter.

If she took half the stock would have tanked and cost her a bunch of value there as well she gave him voting control for that specific reason as well.
