South's 12th-Ranked Outside Linebacker, DeAndre Wilder, Serves up His Five Official Visit Destinations - Miami - Scout
With a dismal 0-2 record to show for it, Deandre Wilder and his teammates at nationally-recognized Miami (Fla.) Carol City have certainly found themselves in uncharted territory to kick off the 2016 season.
A Scout 300 prospect that checks in as the 12th-ranked outside linebacker in the South, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Wilder admits that a good portion of this season's hiccups have came across the line of scrimmage on offense.
The Chiefs have accumulated just 30 points through the first two weeks, but Friday's square off with Lakeland (Fla.) High shouldn't come much easier. The Dreadnaughts have posted back-to-back shutouts to start their season, and racked up at least 34 points in both wins as well.
"The season is going great on defense, but the offense is having struggles and stuff like that," Wilder said. "We're trying to make them better in practice so we don't have mental mistakes during the season.
"My senior year isn't going too well, but I'm going to step it up this week."
The four-star outside linebacker tagged the nearby Miami (Fl) Hurricanes as the front-runner when we first spoke nearly two years ago, and nothing has really changed the mind of the 280th-ranked player overall on Scout.
It still would be somewhat of a surprise if Wilder didn't commit to the 'Canes at some point, but there's also a clear-cut No. 2 school that's been squarely in the mix since the summertime.
"I really have Miami first and Auburn second," Wilder said. "Miami is my hometown and they've been my favorite school growing up."
Wilder, who's also ranked as the fourth-ranked outside linebacker in Florida, expands on both schools below.
Miami: "I like the staff. (Running backs) coach (Thomas) Brown and I have a special connection, and we talk about stuff both on and off the field; on the field it's about football, but it's personal stuff when we're talking about off the field stuff.
"(Defensive coordinator) coach (Manny) Diaz is a great coach. We talk about the defensive schemes, and he comes to my practices sometimes as well."
Auburn: "I think I've been up there twice. The first day I went there and walked in, (linebackers) coach (Travis) Williams said, 'There's a big dog in the building.' We then stepped into his office to talk about how he's been at Auburn and played in the NFL, and then how he came back to his own college.
"He can teach young people how to become a better person and stuff like that."
Wilder hasn't officially penciled in any official visit dates, but already knows of the five schools that will roll out the red carpet and welcome him to campus between now and National Signing Day in February.
"Auburn, Miami, Michigan State, Notre Dame and West Virginia," Wilder said when asked about his official visit destinations.
Wilder says he hopes to make a verbal commitment sometime in November.
