Top 5 Dade County Basketball Players Ever in High School

Iirc, wasn’t Doug a higher ranked prospect than Stevie? Doug was in the conversation for best player in the country when he was coming out of HS.

Btw do you all know that Doug and Allen are on Frank Martin’s staff at umass?

****, you guys took my old *** back down memory lane for sure. HML, Miami High, CC… I remember 1988 and trotting out on the court as a Sophomore while looking at Cesar Portillo saying to myself - this dude HAS to be 27…

Best player I ever played against was Steve Edwards. He could do it all. Older brother Doug was a beast too. I remember seeing a young Allen shooting in the gym watching Steve play - kid was like 13 at the time but so advanced as a player.

Those were some intense rivalries. I remember a few scuffles broke out during HML-CC games. Corchiani’s little *** was right in the middle of it!

Good times back then.

This was part of my original post in this thread back in April 2022...

Solely based off their HS careers, in my eyes the best 5 to ever come out of the 305 are:

1. Doug Edwards (Miami High c/o 1989) - McDonald's AA, ranked the #2 player in the country (behind Kenny Anderson) in 1989. Was the catalyst in Miami High's national resurgence in the 80's. If he doesn't walk out on Jake Caldwell at Jackson, Dade County basketball history would look much different today.
2. Irving Thomas (Carol City c/o 1985) - The first player in Dade county history to play in the McDonald's AA game (1985). First team Parade AA. Top 10 player in the country his senior year. Signed with Kentucky out of HS.
3. Steve Edwards (Miami High c/o 1992) - Named McDonald's and Parade AA his senior year. Twice named FL Mr. Basketball POY. 2 state titles. Top 20 player nationally. Gatorade POY his senior year.
4. Chris Corchiani (HML c/o 1987) - Another Mickey D's and Parade AA coming out of HS. Started in HS since 8th grade. Was also twice named Florida's Mr. Basketball POY.
5. Cyril Baptiste (Curley c/o 1968) - Didn't get to see him play, but the old heads I know swear by him to this day. His former college coach, Eddie Sutton calls him one of the talented players he's ever coached.

Talking Dade County here, but best South Florida player - one man’s opinion - was Mitch Richmond. Saw him up close at K-State and Golden State.
If we're talking just off HS merit, NO CHANCE Richmond is best from South FL. However, if we're talking best ever including college and pro careers I don't think anyone from South Florida has a better resume than Mitch "The Rock" Richmond.

everyone here is missing Gus Guardiola, part of the famous Guardiola clan of Westchester/Rockaway/Columbus.

Gus IIRC averaged 38 points a game at Southwest (he left Columbus when Brother Kevin instituted the famous 4 corners offensive strategy (taken from UNC, maybe??)). Gus was recruited to UNLV by Tarkanian when UNLV was an elite program. Gus left after a year to return to the fabled courts of Tropical Park (at one point in time, i would venture to say that I played more b ball at that park than anyone else), then to a career in modeling for Burdines, then he hit the lotto of modeling and took his talents to NYC where he lastED about a year and then crashed and burned in Miami. he belonged to the Coconut Grove Hare Krisnah sect for about a decade.
