Timberlake

Has anyone seen a flatter jump shot than what Earl shoots? I guess it works for him but **** its ugly.
its pretty bad. He needs some help on that ASAP. And you can tell he hasn't played in a while, he looks just lost out there half the time. The talent is there but he just needs games right now.

Don't we have an assistant who works on shooting? My 10th grader shoots better than him.
Send him to a shooting camp like PGC or something, for goodness sake.

By far the ugliest jumper I’ve ever seen. Biggest problem is he doesn’t even elevate off the ground. That’s why he gets blocked. He also doesn’t appear to be as athletic as advertised.

What’s disappointed me the most with Timberlake so far isn’t even his ugly shooting stroke. It’s his lack of basketball IQ, particularly on the offensive end. His shot selection is horrid. He’s just trying to do way too much out there.

For the life of me I can't understand why he's running the point instead of Wong. He needs be cutting, positing up smaller guards, and scoring in transition. He is not a PG.. And he's not a spot up shooter.

He's a better passer due to seeing the whole court better, and it frees Wong up to concentrate on scoring. That would be my guess.

Ugly stroke is OK if the ball is going in. Not OK if it isn't. Simple as that. You don't get to be a 4 or 5 star player (whatever he was rated) at DeMatha without scoring/shooting ability. That said, would rather have had the 7 footer, ****inson from that squad.

Well it's not working. His handle is not good and he can't create his own shot from the top.
Agreed. Sure, he is a good passer when he looks to pass. But he's trying to do way too much out there, often forces things and takes horrific shots or commits a ton of turnovers. If we are going to play him at Point Guard, he needs to be pass first and look to create opportunities for guys like Wong, Olanyi, Cross, and Walker. Maybe he's trying to force himself out of his offensive slump, but it (combined with Beverly's poor play) cost us the UNC game.

He had the rep of being a "lock down" defender and a player who could guard 1-5. Have we seen that at all? Not being facetious, an honest question.

Also had the rep of being a fine rebounder and passer. I'd say I have seen some evidence of those aspects of his game. His handle does need work.

Think he's trying to do too much.

I'd save the behind the back passes until after I was a bit more established.

It has become a trend to see our highest rated freshmen disappoint initially.

Lonnie Walker struggled for a good part of his freshman season (at least compared to his top 25 ranking). So did Dewan Hernandez. I'd say of L's highest rated recruits, Bruce Brown was probably the most impressive as a true freshman. I think L does better with veteran players than he does with freshmen.

Wasn’t Lonnie coming off an injury?

Lonnie struggled, was hurt, but you could also see the talent. Even when he was struggling, he would make a play that would catch your attention. I look at Earl, and I'm not seeing that kind of top end talent. I see a guy that is desperate need of development. A 5 star guy should be able to come in and be a top end guy on form alone. Lonnie, once he got healthy was able to do that, Bruce was able to do that.

We need to admit that a lot of these scouts are straight trash and put too much stock into physical measurements and not enough on people being able to actually play basketball. College and pro ball are a lot different than playing in these AAU tournaments where no one plays d and the coaching is awful. Earl doesn't have the shot that Lonnie had, he doesn't have the handle and ability to finish that Bruce had. Frankly, he has a lot in common with Dewan in that he's an athlete that pretends to play basketball. They don't have overly high basketball IQs, they are used to being able to use their athletic ability to dominate lesser people. Athletes that can't play basketball get exposed eventually, especially in today's game.

Was Timberlake rated a 4 or 5 star? Thought it was 4!

I agree with your definition of a 5 star. Lonnie was not that. Shot 34% from the 3 point arc, and had 14 games where he scored less than 10 pts. Scored 20 or more just 3x. As u say, though, his NBA potential was evident, and that was what he was drafted on. Not his true frosh performance at UM.
