Al Golden has informed the team during a meeting before winter break that 13-15 players would be cut from the team.
After a year of seeing what he has on the roster, more are expected to be on their way out. And don’t expect some
of the late additions or “reaches†to be safe from the cuts. If guys did not show enough promise or prove enough,
do not expect them to be back next season.
Davon Johnson has had an unproductive career at Miami after a standout prep career at Booker T. Washington and
he is considering transferring. Johnson has caught five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown (all during his freshman year)
in three years as a wide receiver before moving to defensive back last year, where he was primarily on special teams.
Johnson is looking into transferring to a Division I-A program and being able to play immediately much like Mike Williams
did this year for UM after transferring from Wake Forest.
Brandon McGee has always been one of the fastest players on the team, but has not developed into a premier player.
McGee has struggled at times, but he is considering leaving UM for the NFL Draft.
Ray Ray Armstrong is walking on thin ice with the UM program especially with his incident that got him suspended for
the Florida State game, but Armstrong’s father has stated publicly that his son will return for his senior year amid the
number of other early departures. Fellow safety Vaughn Telemaque is also staying in Coral Gables for his senior year.
Telemaque is aware that he did not make enough big plays last season to warrant an early departure for the draft.
Remember Jermaine Johnson? He was expected to compete for a starting role again in 2011, but he never was able
to convince the new staff to earn playing time. He played in just one game this past season and is now expected
to be moved to defensive tackle. Johnson is a 6-foot-6, 320-pound rising junior.
With Brandon Washington leaving early for the NFL Draft, the coaches’ plan for the 2012 starting lineup is as having
Seantrel Henderson and Malcolm Bunche battle it out at left tackle. Then, having Brandon Linder move from right
guard to left guard. Shane McDermott would step in at center and Jared Wheeler at right guard with Jon Feliciano
returning at right tackle. McDermott and Wheeler have shown positive signs at times with their development, but still
need to prove they can be consistent and dominant for long stretches.
NCAA Investigation
For all that are curious when an announcement by the NCAA will be made about Miami’s penalties regarding their investigation,
an NCAA official does not expect a decision to be made until April at the earliest. A likely decision will come during the summer,
well after February’s signing day for recruits. UM self-imposed a one-year bowl ban on itself this year, but future punishments
are expected to happen. Even though athletic director Shawn Eichorst, Al Golden and most of the staff were not around during
the alleged incidents, UM is still expected to get hit with some sort of punishment--either future bowl bans, loss of scholarships,
or both. Former UM athletic director Paul Dee’s tough stance on USC during his time as the chairman of the NCAA Committee on
Infractions, does not bode well for Miami’s current situation.
