Thurston Armbrister

He absolutely suffered a season ending injury after the second or third game of the season. He's a redshirt sophomore.

Jesus ****ing christ, do I have to do everything around here?!

Do you know where I can get tickets for the Wake Forest game?

Well, OK, just one more thing. Thurston would not have been eligible for a "normal" redshirt because he played in at least one game. Maybe he could apply for an extra year on medical grounds, but I thought that had to be worked out in the future after the end of his regular eligibility. If that is correct (it may not be), then he is a junior with the possibility of perhaps eventually applying for an extra year of eligibility for medical reasons.

Yes but I don't believe you can apply for your 6th year hardship until you are in your last season.

That's what I meant by "...but I thought that had to be worked out in the future after the end of his regular eligibility."

How did we already get to a 6th year with The Millionaire?

Money can buy anything. Even a 6th year.

You have 5 years of eligibility in which to compete in 4 seasons. Armbrister applied for a Medical Hardship waiver to gain a season of competiton (i.e., the season in which he was unable to play does not count as one of the 4).

You must meet the following criteria to obtain the waiver: you didn't play in more than 4 games, a MD must provide medical documentation of your injury, you didn't play in any of the games starting with game 7 and running through the post season. Since UM did not have a post season the last 2 years, the players could appeal to the ACC for the waiver as soon as the regular season was over.

To obtain a 6th year of eligibility, you apply for a waiver of the five-year rule. Generally speaking, you need 2 Medical Hardship years to obtain a 6th year of eligibility. As soon as you meet the criteria, you can apply for the waiver. If you red shirt your 1st year, play your 2nd year, have a medical hardship your third year, and then play your 4th and 5th years, chances of getting a 6th year are practically non existent (you would have had 4 healthy seasons to compete, but chose to red shirt one of them). If in the previous example, you have a medical hardship instead of red shirting your 1st year, then you would have 2 medical hardship seasons and you could apply for a 6th year of eligibility after your 3rd year as you would have met the criteria for a waiver of the five-year rule.
