Firing Golden mid-stream seems like a tremendous risk, but Blake should be doing everything he can to tee up Mario Cristobal for this job. Three years at the seat of the master in Alabama, deep ties to the U, and a ferocious recruiter, he is the obvious choice to molify the fan base, turn the program around, and keep what look to be outstanding recruiting classes in '16 and '17 together.
Coley and D'Onofrio obviously need to be shown the door, as well. How the offense scored 3 points in the second half against that defense is inexplicable. And the third down woes are solely on Coley. Line Trayone Grey up behind a full back on short yardage. Enough of this spread, read option with a QB who, while he is a budding star, is NO THREAT to run the ball. Go for it on 4th and 1 at mid-field. Where is the killer instinct? Where is the fire?
D'onofrio is an NFL coach, with an NFL system. How is it that we hear all spring and summer how explosive, and deep the DL is, and then watch a freshman QB, making his first start, pick the D apart from a clean pocket. I don't recall a single play last night when the front four generated even moderate pressure. If the system is read-and-react, talent is being wasted. There is no doubt that every highly-ranked DL the Canes recruit is being told by rivals that it would be stupid to come to Miami because their talent will be wasted, their potential unrealized. Anthony Chickallo is on an NFL roster after being absolutely neutered at Miami. Switch to a 4-3, let the DEs pin their ears back, and reek havoc.
Regarding Dallas Crawford, no one who watched last nights game can aruge he should remain in the rotation. He was lost, both in coverage and in locating the ball. He is a liability. Carter, Bush, Jenkins, and Johnson are a solid group.
As for FSU, assuming Grace is healthy, the defense will be at full-strength, and should be able to compete with what has been a surprisingly mediocre FSU offense. I just hope FSU beats Clemson, and doesn't come into the game with something to prove against their in-state rival. If FSU comes into the Miami undefeated, I could certainly see them overlooking Miami. That would be a very good thing.
Yeah, let's hire a coach who was fired by FIU to take over our program.
And being the OL coach for Alabama doesn't impress me. I'm sure Golden could be a perfectly fine TE coach under Saban, too - doesn't mean he's HC material.
Hiring Mario to replace Golden will put this program back another decade.
