I think Elijah Lofton by far is our most talented player on offense and success this year may depend on his ability to be a Mackey finalist.
In many ways : Miami this year is offensively similar to UGA in 2023 offensively.
That year they had a 1st year starter in Beck and his two main options were Bowers, who was probably the most gifted TE prospect of alltime and a sophomore Ladd McConkey.
Bowers was listed around 6”4 240 that year and Lofton, though likely smaller is around 6”3 230. Lofton has some of the multifaceted skillset that Bowers possesses in bundles.
I think the smart approach is to lean on Lofton being the absolute feature in the offense this year. Similar to UGA we are planning on using a committee approach at RB like they had in Edwards, Robinson, & Milton.
We’ll have Fletcher/Lyles at our disposal with freshmen sprinkled in.
Another factor will be having a reliable and productive WR in a McConkey role that can keep teams honest and open up chances for Lofton to be used more. The guy needs to be Trader if he is who is billed as.
Lastly the schedules are identical in that there is a critical 3 game stretch within 5 that likely gives us an answer on how the season pans out.
Theirs happen in the last 5 November in 2023 when they faced: three ranked opps in a row in OLE MISS/MIZZOU/TENN. They also faced and beat GT/FLA in that stretch. They ended up 12-1 that year after losing to Bama in the SEC title game and throttling FSU in the Orange bowl.
We face in our first five games a similar litmus test of 3 opps with: ND/FLA/FSU. USF/Bethune are sprinkled in between.
Miami will need to have a solidified offensive approach to start the season and there likely won’t be a kind adjustment period.
If the team can lean on/unlock Lofton, it’ll give the offense a very formidable advantage early season.
