The Secondary

I mean I’m not high on them I thought that bama/usf game was ugly football in general and not indicative of a good usf team but I think it’s a good step up from ball st / famu
Just not impressed with Brown as a passer. Step up from those two, sure. Don’t think they’re better than Florida to be honest

I like the physicality of this secondary, both the safeties and corners. None of them are as physically impressive or thumpers like Kam, JW, Tyrique, but they pursue well to the ball, take good angles, get around/thru blockers, and have been great so far against runners in the open field. Don't allow a lot of yards after contact.

Definitely noteworthy to start but we haven't played anyone yet. Gators are dogsh*t on offense and the other two were glorified scrimmages. I like what I've seen so far but we should be honest in that we don't really know what we have yet.

Eh

Everyone we are relying on has already had success before

To some degree. But as a whole we don't know what it would look like against an actual competent upper level passing attack.
I get what you’re saying though yeah

We still gotta see it with this team

It’s also not blind optimism but that’s not what you’re saying either

The talent gives me confidence but the leadership qualifiers I’m seeing is really what I like

We really need Demari Back so we can sure up our rotation. I feel a whole lot better with him and DPJ as our veteran Cornerbacks to go along with our safeties. Then with OJ and Zay Patterson coming along we have some young athleticism added

All I saw was post after post about losing Kam and James. But anyone who really watched the team last year saw how many times they busted coverage trying to make a play. That’s how we lost to Louisville. I actually saw them arguing back there after we gave up a touchdown.

All we needed was for our safeties to play their responsibilities in the defense this year and we would be better. It’s not the whole season but we look good back there. Of course us having what looks like one of the best pass rushes in the country certainly helps.
That’s what happens when you’re thinking about the draft so you start jumping routes. Teams saw that in film and took advantage.

Not trying to be a **** but they haven’t really faced anything close to a decent passing offense. USF won’t be much of a challenge either as their QB sucks and are a running offense. I like how OJ has come a long as a freshman. Porter can play inside and out and the safety group Harris and Meesh has been pretty solid. The depth will be tested come ACC play but I think as long as our DL and LBs eat, we’ll be fine.

I just posted in my game thread but they're a lot more fundamentally sound than in recent years. Maybe that's a db coach thing.

Richard clearly looks like he can be picket on to me. When Damari Brown returns, I'm really hoping we aren't seeing too much of Richard AND Brown on the field at the same time. Porter, Hill, and I guess Frederique should be our primary outside CBs (Seem to be our best actual cover guys) and have Damari in the Nickel/Star role or whatever they call it....

I am not at all surprised that with Powell and Harris at Safety that it has made out entire Secondary perform better. In fact I said that would be the case before this season even began...

Still we haven't played anyone that can actually throw. And USF can't either unless we overcommit to stopping the Run (and their running QB) and they throw a few big passes... Then again we don't really play anyone that can pass all that well. Biggest test is going to be Louisville and Probably Syracuse I guess... a couple solid tests in between, but nothing crazier than we faced against UF... But we will face actual running QBs which will put a lot more pressure on our DBs than we've had these first few games..
