My biggest fear is the defense plays poorly again this year and we have to go through this all over again with a DC hire.

This is a legitimate concern. Because our Offense was so blatantly bad, many overlook how disappointing our defense was as well. Kevin Steele isn't a slouch but we can do better.

I can think of one DC, who has worked for Mario before, who would be better at in-game adjustments and recruiting. He's currently unemployed

No, his offense is a lot cooler than theirs.

Hard to have a good defense when the offense you practiced against is terrible, the LB core you inherited is pretty nonexistent, and your team culture is already crappy.
Before anybody brings up Iowa, keep in mind their DC has been there for 2 decades now, and wasn't in year 1. His defense was already built with his players and established before their offense started to be amazingly bad

Jim Leonard is unemployed right now. His only job has been at Wisconsin but he did well there and took over the interim head coach position when Chryst got canned. I could see him trying for a head coach position though too. He became their full time DC in 2017 (stats below). A little surprised Fickell didn’t retain him.

“In his year off between retiring from the NFL and being named DB coach for the Badgers, Leonhard spent his time studying college film with then-Wisconsin Defensive Coordinator Dave Aranda and familiarizing himself with schemes that exist in college football that aren't prevalent in the NFL”

2021 – 1st in total defense (5th in passing yards per game, 1st in rushing, 4th in PPG allowed) – 2nd nationally in yards per play (4.17).

2020 – 5th in total defense (31st in passing yards, 5th in rushing, 9th in PPG allowed)

2019 – 8th in total defense (16th passing yards, 8th in rushing, 10th in PPG allowed)

2018 – 41st in total defense (38th in passing yards, 56th in rushing, 43rd in PPG allowed)

2017 – 1st in total defense (4th in passing yards, 2nd in rushing, 3rd in PPG allowed)

My biggest fear is still the offense, lol. But yes this is a legit concern as well although I do expect improvement (not saying much).
Steele wasn't nearly the problem Gattis was. I could at least understand and follow what he was trying to do. You saw flashes of what the D could be, but you had a lot of dead weight playing because you had no choice. I'm sure there will be a lot of uneven play defensively, because a lot of young guys will play this year, but young guys playing with actual talent and coaching(it's a lot tougher to fix guys that were broken by previous staff compared to building up new guys) should perform better than guys that just weren't going to get it. Having a relatively competent O will help the D too. I can't think of a single game where the O helped the D last year. In fact, the D basically knew that if they gave up more than 17 points, they weren't winning. That's an insane expectation.

I just hate to move Field off field ?:3 on
It’s a legitimate concern. It is what it is when your hc doesn’t really have a schematic speciality on either side of the ball. The hope is you have enough guys with legit track records between steele, strong, and addae that this doesn’t happen.

I tend to agree because of what Steele put on the field in multiple games where he just didn’t make a single adjustment. MTSU and FSU come to mind with the Air Raid and Counter.

Having said that, you could at least make an argument IF healthy we have a top 5 DE, top 5 DT, and top 3 safety….that usually means something for most teams lol
