Official The OC Candidates Thread 2.0

Honestly, I don’t even know if Applewhite has been interviewed for sure, although that’s what sources are saying, and in the end, I don’t care who gets the OC gig like everyone does on here with their hair on fire, but it’s entirely possible that if Applewhite is being interviewed, it’s as a quarterback coach. Of course if he’s being interviewed, it could be as an OC, I’m just throwing that out as another possibility.

At the end of the day, you won’t find me pulling my hair out and screaming like a girl if someone like him or other unpopular candidates are hired, just like you don’t see me, screaming and eeking, like a teenage fan girl for the DC hire, Guidry, who apparently is a very popular hire here.

Mario has been hired to win games and bring the program back to national prominence and playoff contention. He will either do it, or he won’t. That’s all I really care about. And I realize whatever philosophical approaches he takes on offense, or defense, in the end, the aforementioned goals are going to be the ultimate judgment metric.

I would be lukewarm over Applewhite. I know Herman thinks highly of him. Worked under Mack Brown, Saban, Herman. Been a head coach, oc, calls plays, and understands the qb position. Could do worse I suppose.

Just sent a snip of that tweet from Barry to a friend who is an associate AD at a prominent SEC program.. his response..

“Zero chance he wants to make that move and even less chance Dan actually lets him make that move even if he wanted to. Career suicide.”

10 minutes later

“We’ve done all we can to keep him away from someone on our staff”
It would be career suicide for Applewhite?

I take that last sentence to mean there's a high-profile, talented coach on their staff that they are trying to prevent Miami from purging? If so, that's a good sign, yes?

In that last sentence, was he talking about a female on staff?

Nope. Nothing like Gatass stuff at all. I actually seen motion (from WR, Y, and TE) and Quick WR screens, think I saw a Power/pass or two… with pulling OL. RPOs, I saw a lot of Pistol formations, waggle passes outta pistol, true Zone Reads. Counter passes. I even seen a couple of Y crosses. This stuff is NOTHING like Gattis if u know what you’re looking at. Gattis was resorting to running Flea Flickers against teams like GSU…. because he had no clue how to get muhfuccas open. I seen more ny99as running wide open in that one film clip than I seen running open in all our games last year, combined. He’s not a **** name in 2023, he’s a bit long in the tooth, but the guy can still call an effective offense. But football ON ANY LEVEL… is an “outta sight, outta mind” business. You go away or down a level or two, for a few years and people forget about you.
You watched a highlight clip from a year in which that offense finished 91st in scoring. You just happened to watch a game where they had their highest point total of the year. Willing to bet if you watch other games from that year all that creativity won't be there as better defenses are shutting them down. Applewhite has never been better than average anywhere he's been.

He's out of sight for a reason. The man went to Nick Saban's rehab for down and out coaches and the best he could do was be the South Alabama OC. The offense was better in 2022 so credit to him for that but he aint the one.

Who is Corey Raymond at UF for $1000 Alex?

Dawson's offenses are pretty solid. Nothing mind blowing, but he would not be a bad hire.

But as has been a consistent theme w many of these hires: we could and should do better.
if you take a pretty solid **** it still takes alot of cleanup. If its actually solid you just wipe the old **** cutter and move along.

I mean, like I said, Mario could hire the least popular CIS candidate, and I wouldn’t even break a sweat. Or even comment about it. I never do on these hires, whether they’re wildly popular here, or the opposite. Of course, I am interested in who’s going to be hired just on the basis of the Canes are my team and my alma mater.

The head guy is here to do what I said, win games, bring this program back to national prominence and playoff contention in a reasonable number of seasons.

He can do it however he wants, but that’s what he has to do.

And if he doesn’t, I’m not worried about it. We’ll find someone else. I think the commitment will be there either way from an organizational and booster standpoint.

Well I am glad that someone is actually being the adult in the room and not just letting Mario hire whoever he wants.

The fact that MC still can’t identify what a good OC looks like is terrifying though.

That’s the most concerning part for me. I simply see no justification for the process dragging out this long. Three weeks from spring practice and still having no OC is simply unacceptable. Let’s just hope somehow Mario hits it out of the park here, but IMO, if that were happening, it would have happened already.

After Clesi Crochet very hard.

Really a fan of her Auburn offense. Jessica Cristobal is the timing hold up trying not to let it go through

I honestly thought you were talking about Applewhite going after some cooch on that staff. Since they’re in the same state. Anyway, I believe he had that reputation at one time.

I was assuming it was on offense but @JayCane20 now has me obsessed to know who would be career suicide for Mario. Maybe it’s the same wet fart name from @Cribby the other day.
Major Applewhite would be career suicide for Mario.

Based on the OC at his school (assuming it’s actually the OC and not a WR coach he’s after) his sights are much higher than Major Applewhite. I’d be happy with it.
