I don't know Miami's name alone will land good enough players to win the Coastal.
Think about it. Do you really think duke, vt, wake, ect..ect... have better players. . Get real. We still have at worst 3 star talent .
hmmm..in certain position yes others no but overall I don't see any significant talent gap between the programs especially with guys like Duke and Dorsett out.
Also, you have to consider those programs have had continuity in their coaching staffs for years (VT, Wake) which lead to having right player fit to what they are running something that Golden doesn't have the luxury yet.
This is something people just love to ignore. Beamer has his system down to a science. The guy has been there forever. And he's had a lot of continuity in his staff. If Beamer was the coach here, we would have run him out of town in year 3. But he built that program from the ground up until he got it just right. That's why its plug and play for them now most years. Same with Cutcliff at Duke. No he will never have the athletes we have, but he's refining a system and getting the kinds of kids he feels can succeed in it. There is little pressure there because no one is going to demand he be fired if he doesnt win the Coastal. Same with Grobe at WF. Those guys have a lot of leeway which makes their system successful. They dont have the athletes, but they are still able to be somewhat competitive because they have spent years making the most of what they have, and have it down to a science.
WE dont have that luxury here. We have had game of musical chairs in coaching, and that has been a HUGE problem for us, more than most people realize. It DOES take time to change a culture and fully implement a system. Im not saying Golden's will eventually be successful, or that Donofrio knows what he's doing, or that it explains our defensive collapse, but were not going to be able to get back to elite status unless we have the time to really fully develop and implement a system here with some continuity. Sure, sometimes you can catch lightning in a bottle with someone like Jimmy Johnson, or a Nick Saban, but we cant spend eternity searching for that once in a generation type coach who can do it in a year or two, and we cant afford the kind of guy who can come in and bring in a top shelf staff to speed up the process. So we have to hope that AG knows what he is doing, and that it all comes together the right way. But we do need that continuity. I really feel the revolving door of coaches, and especially assistants and coordinators, has done a LOT of harm to this program over the last decade.
Well I think a couple VERY bad head coaches in the last decade did a lot more damage then the revolving door of said coaches. If you're suggesting that we'd be better off right now if Coker or Shannon were still coach, I'm gonna have to disagree strongly with you on that.
I do agree with the premise of your post though. The RIGHT coach should be given time to develop his program. Hope Golden is that guy.
