The NCAA investigation had minimal effect on recruiting

Who believes this? Is this just an excuse for our lack of depth at key positions?

Many posters are cavalierly dismissing the 'cloud' with a sniff.

Not sure 3 years of uncertainty haven't had a serious impact.

Anyone that dismisses the cloud and it's effect on recruiting is delusional. Just as delusional as anyone that uses lack of talent as an excuse for losing to Duke and VT this year.

Severe impact on recruiting. its a cutthroat business and kids are obviously fed any and all propaganda so recruit will eliminate Miami, thus a lot of local talent decided to leave. We have been punished and hurt more in recruiting then all of what gave up in terms of ACCCG and Bowl bids. IMO this will take time to overcome, with this staff or another.

Think about it. Do you really think duke, vt, wake, ect..ect... have better players. . Get real. We still have at worst 3 star talent .

I agree with you, but we tend to look at this with vague generalizations, and that may not be all that accurate. In a general sense, yes, I think we have more talent than Duke. But their offensive players ARE better than many guys we have starting on defense. Forget recruiting rankings, stars, etc. Some of their weapons are absolutely better than what we can put out there defensively, and they proved that by lining up and beating them.

Negative recruiting using the cloud is what hurt us badly

I honestly feel the Yahoo article hurt us more than the actual investigation process. NCAA allowed Yahoo to put up a pretty slanderous article without any proof whatsoever

This thread has attention ***** characteristics all around it. Another fine Dandy porst.

hmmm..in certain position yes others no but overall I don't see any significant talent gap between the programs especially with guys like Duke and Dorsett out.
Also, you have to consider those programs have had continuity in their coaching staffs for years (VT, Wake) which lead to having right player fit to what they are running something that Golden doesn't have the luxury yet.

Yeah, recruiting want affected by every hairball columnist preaching death penalty and opposing coaches leaving said articles with the recruits and their families. We had activist sports personalities wanting our heads on a platter.

3WayGayZoneCane believes it didn't effect us. Was just another Golden excuse he claims.

It absolutely affected us. As others have already said, this is a cut throat enterprise right now. We are competing for some of the top players in the nation, against the top programs in the nation, and every little bit can help push a team into the lead. Were coming off a decade of mediocrity, a smaller fan base, and then you have opposing coaches, players and media all screaming death penalty, and saying the NCAA was going to crush us and that the kids who were going to come here would end up playing on a handicapped team and never going to a bowl again. Sure it got in some kids head. It had to.

Was it the ONLY reason for our issues? **** no. But it was certainly a factor in us losing many of these close battles. Every little bit helps. And that was a HUGE cloud hanging over us.

This is something people just love to ignore. Beamer has his system down to a science. The guy has been there forever. And he's had a lot of continuity in his staff. If Beamer was the coach here, we would have run him out of town in year 3. But he built that program from the ground up until he got it just right. That's why its plug and play for them now most years. Same with Cutcliff at Duke. No he will never have the athletes we have, but he's refining a system and getting the kinds of kids he feels can succeed in it. There is little pressure there because no one is going to demand he be fired if he doesnt win the Coastal. Same with Grobe at WF. Those guys have a lot of leeway which makes their system successful. They dont have the athletes, but they are still able to be somewhat competitive because they have spent years making the most of what they have, and have it down to a science.

WE dont have that luxury here. We have had game of musical chairs in coaching, and that has been a HUGE problem for us, more than most people realize. It DOES take time to change a culture and fully implement a system. Im not saying Golden's will eventually be successful, or that Donofrio knows what he's doing, or that it explains our defensive collapse, but were not going to be able to get back to elite status unless we have the time to really fully develop and implement a system here with some continuity. Sure, sometimes you can catch lightning in a bottle with someone like Jimmy Johnson, or a Nick Saban, but we cant spend eternity searching for that once in a generation type coach who can do it in a year or two, and we cant afford the kind of guy who can come in and bring in a top shelf staff to speed up the process. So we have to hope that AG knows what he is doing, and that it all comes together the right way. But we do need that continuity. I really feel the revolving door of coaches, and especially assistants and coordinators, has done a LOT of harm to this program over the last decade.

Well I think a couple VERY bad head coaches in the last decade did a lot more damage then the revolving door of said coaches. If you're suggesting that we'd be better off right now if Coker or Shannon were still coach, I'm gonna have to disagree strongly with you on that.

I do agree with the premise of your post though. The RIGHT coach should be given time to develop his program. Hope Golden is that guy.

It affected us, but only in the matter of elite talent. The problem is we still recruited enough talent to not give up 500 yards a game to bad teams.

Did it have an impact on us recruiting elite talent? Yea definitely.

Did it have an impact on us recruiting quality players that would bench Highsmith, Green. Cornelius, Renfrow, etc? **** no.
