The common link among champions

but, why didn't the 2002 team win it? that was an arguably more talented team. I think the poor coaching caught up with

The worst call in CFB history.

The call that is the reason why we have instant replay in CFB.

it was the worst call ever, but we had so much more talent all around then OSU it shouldnt have even been close. some real bad calls went our way early in the game as well... so im pretty much tired of and over the whole "call" thing. it was Miami's own fault that there was even an oppertunity to lose that game. after years and years of blaming it on the call, im finally done. we arent getting that one back, we arent 6 time champs, and larry coker still sucks.

Wrong. If the UM D-line had played with passion and effort the game is over. The slow footed OSU QB, burned us on a 4th and 12(or14) with a scramble for a first down. D-Line makes that play, no OT. PLus that penalty call doesn't get called if the D-line sacks the QB on that play.

DMoney is on to something here.

I agree also.... Don't just look at the osu game...... That whole season we was playing with fire and didn't get burned til it counted. They Almost lost to ******* Rutgers that yr(Rutgers that yr was 50x worse than usf this yr) fsu ran for like 300 on us that yr, and so did West VA..... **** on the first play of the game vs tenn that yr their rb had a 80 yrd run on us.... This team didn't play with the fire of the 01 team. If they did then osu would have gotten the Nebraska treatment...... I had a bad feeling bout that game that I kept to myself. No way should Craig krenzel run all around Wolford Dj vilma and McDougle but he did. Yes the ***** *** flag ****ed us in the end but it shouldn't have gotten that close. Jimmy Johnson said don't leave the game in the hands of the refs. Blow they punk asses out!!!!!!

Not as much as you would think. IIRC, they had 4 first round draft picks on that defense and just about every starter was drafted in the first 4 rounds. They had a **** good D. And the backups were good too. On offense, yeah, you're right - much less talent, but they had a great running game back then and 2 first round WRs and an extremely efficient/cerebral QB. You have those things and you're gonna be good.

This is a 2012 thread but the song remains the same. FSU won with Tim Jernigan, Eddie Goldman and Mario Edwards. Ohio State won with Joey Bosa, Michael Bennett and Adolphus Washington. Now Bama's monster DL wins over Clemson's monster DL.

Miami has the best DL coach in the country coaching seven high school All-Americans. If we turn it around, it will start up front.

Yep. Same logic applies to Clemson, whose DL was every bit Bama's equal tonight. That's what made this game.

Preach.

Not wide outs or 40 times.

This is the truth. Its the same in the NFL. The NY Giants drafted scads of defensive linemen and won 2 titles, getting consistent pressure with front 4. Then some cat left them and became GM at Carolina Panthers who did the same thing, stockpile effective DL, and now look at Carolina. Just like NY Giants used to have, Carolina has bodies aplenty on the DL and can sub in quality all game long and dominate that side of the ball. If Carolina loses it will be because their secondary blows (injuries). The old Steelers, the Niners, Cowboys all had monster DL (and other top shelf units as well) but I can't think of any team who won big with a bad front 7.

We have some serious talent on the DL, if Coach Kool gets their play to match their potential we will make a huge leap.

another nasty dt to pair with willis while chad and aqm wreak havoc on the outside would be nice

If Joseph Jackson sticks, we will have seven high school All-Americans on DL. And that doesn't include Demetrius Jackson and RJ McIntosh, who are as gifted as any of them.

Completely agree. My Ranking of Importance of position groups:
1. DL
2. OL
3. QB
4. DB
5. RB
6. LB (assuming 43)
7. WR
Luckily for us, WR isn't too important of a position. We aren't in good shape at WR as of today. However, WR is one of the positions that Freshman can generally come in and make a solid contribution towards day 1.
Our next weakest position is DB, but luckily for us DB's are significantly impacted by the DL. Have a great DL, and it makes your DBs look good because they don't have to cover as long.

I think over the years and after witnessing Golden's failures at recruiting the DL, particularly DT, we're all on board with this viewpoint.

didnt Golden turn some scrub 2star DTs into 1st round draft picks... we might be straight...

It's not only Golden who failed in that department. It started with Coker, continued with Shannon then Golden. It wasn't only recruiting failure but also development and coaching. The inability to get real "professional" assistants is what doomed this program.

Clemson's team is similar to what we should be seeing at Miami. The difference, is Miami should be able to get better skill players because of the local SoFla talent and have a deeper bench. You saw what happened to Alabamas OL when going against a fast and physical front of Clemson's DL. Dodd was too quick and strong enough to do what he wanted. Dodd is 6'5", 275. Chad Thomas and AQM should both be playing that way and be in the 255-65 lb range. Those are the type of guys you get at Miami. It's why NoD and Goldens D didn't work. You were asking these guys to go straight in an engage 305-325 OL and out muscle them. Its not going to happen. It's not enough to have talented DL, you also have to use them to their strengths. Dodd and Lawson would disappear in NoD's system. There was a play were Dodd shot inside the Tackle and grabbed Henry for a 3 yard loss. My first thought was the one time Luther Robinson shot a gap and made a play like that, celebrated and then ran to the sideline where he was immediately chewed out for not doing his assignment. He wasn't the designated tackler on the play and was suppose to occupy a blocker.

I'm excited to see what Coach Kuligowsli and Diaz do with the talent they have on the DL. Anyone who thinks there isn't talent there, needs to go back and watch their HS tapes. Not one of them got to showcase their talents in the read and react bull**** we had to put up with for the last 5 years. The DL is full of 4 and 5 star talent. Some people on here want to label them all busts, but when ALL of your 4-5 star guys aren't playing up to their talent, it's a systemic issue. It starts with fattening guys up and losing their athleticism, putting them in the wrong positions and then forcing them to do something that isn't a strength of theirs while never taking advantage of their actual strengths.

God it feels good to actually enjoy talking about Miami football again. To be able to use past tense to talk about NoD and Golden is the gift that keeps on giving.

It's funny looking at that list and the Bama guys are all freaking JAGS. All super stiff so they don't make an impact in the NFL. Steroids will do that to you.
