They are playing against a talented defense with an elite staff coaching them. Defense is always ahead of the offense in fall camp
This right here. The DL and secondary is the best it’s been in FOREVER. We have a true first rounder at CB in Stevenson. The receivers are good, but **** one side of the field is always on lockdown. There’s no true number one, but you’re not getting him free if there is. We have a great coaching staff and depth. It’s most telling that the best receiver is out of the slot.

There‘s still spots up for grab especially at cb opposite of cb and nickel. There’s more competition in that room than we’ve had in a minute. Couch, Dunson, Porter, Graves , IVEY have flashed. The defense will be a staple of a Kevin Steele defense “ physical and tough “.
I'd really love to see Ivey put it all together at game time.

I also want to see Steed show what he's capable of.

Mario lays out the plans for the next 2 weeks in this.

Thanks! So few more practices then into game week. 👍🏼

Below are some notes on yesterday's scrimmage based on numerous conversations with sources:

- Overall, the offense looked sharper than last scrimmage, although the defense won the day. Tyler Van Dyke had better pockets and was driving the ball. He had a long pass down the middle to Xavier Restrepo along with a TD to Elijah Arroyo.

- With the room depeleted by injuries, walk-on RBs Devon Perry and Terrell Walden II had moments to shine. Perry in particular looked explosive with a 50+ yard TD run. Thad Franklin also had some slippery runs between the tackles.

- The throw of the day was a corner route TD from Jake Garcia to Jacolby George.

- The top overall performer on the day may have been freshman CB Chris Graves. He had at least four pass breakups and continues to tackle with physicality. He is young for his grade and the arrow is still pointing up.

- Jaleel Skinner had several nice catches-and-runs along with a TD in red zone work.

- The wide receivers had some drops and continued to have issues making big plays downfield in contested situations. However, Gattis seems to be doing a better job of scheming players open for chunk plays (especially Restrepo).

- Nyjalik Kelly and Leonard Taylor made nice plays in the backfield.

- The linebackers had another good day, with Caleb Johnson looking the best of the group. Chase Smith continues to flash unique twitch and strike ability, especially as a blitzer.

- Anez Cooper continues to flash with several pancake blocks.

- Malik Curtis got some opportunities with the ones and showed big-time speed running down Restrepo and preventing a TD.

- Justice Oluwasun is battling Logan Sagapolu at RG and got significant work with the 1s. He’s also getting work at RT.

thank you @DMoney nice Sunday update

who will be returning kicks/punts?.. is Curtis being considered?

He did some good things in the spring game, and he’ll almost assuredly get some work against Bethune. He won’t steal reps from the others, but would make for a nice story if he can get some burn.

On another note (and I’m not trying to be the grammar police), but this is just unprofessional…let’s not be the Noles here and misspell common words. Someone should fix this; pretty sure it’s supposed to be “in track” and not “on track” as well, but yeah…embarrassing/annoying.

The throw from Jake doesn't surprise me. If he continues to polish his skills behind tvd this year the transition next year will be seamless.

Perry ran well in the spring I think we'll be ok at RB if we stay healthy from here and get Chaney back by mid season

Love to hear that the young guys are doing work, especially Graves. Dammit! I really wanted Citizen to show out like Braelon Allen.

I hope the drops aren't coming from the big receivers...you know the guys that should be making contested catches. I'm praying someone else steps up at WR. X being our most reliable is cool but rarely do we hear anyone else's name consistently.

I know we have three good safeties but how are Harrell, Washington, and Balom performing? Is Blades still at S? @DMoney @Cribby

Good stuff. Love hearing that about Graves. We need more fiesty, tough, aggressive mfs in our secondary. I expect him to be a guy in 2023 with Ivey and Tyrique gone. He isn’t a guy that will be ruined by coaching and passive scheme either. He can become something special.

Thanks @DMoney ! Man, the WR drop news is concerning. A big third down that ends in a dropped pass is deflating, sucks the air out of the stadium, and flips momentum. Almost like a turnover or missed FG.

Overall, I'll take a good to great physical defense with a heisman dark hose in TVD.
Restrepo will be our 3rd down guy.
