The Athletic: FSU, Miami and their long — and unsuccessful — courtship with the SEC

#1 I entirely agree with. Would be great to play the Gators regularly again. But the BiG has the largest media markets and better academic institutions (and it's not even close). I also believe national coverage will ultimately trump the value of geographic proximity. So in the long run they're the stronger conference, as well. JMHO.

It would definitely be much harder for the schedulers and for players in Sports that have 2 games or more a week, like basketball, though.

He just asked me for my reasons for the SEC. I agree, there are positives in favor of the Big 10 as well.

Big 10 seems most likely to happen.

Still looking for hills to die on...

Look, the University of Florida has intentionally tried to **** over Miami and F$U for decades. That's a fact.

And you overlooked the inherent contradiction in the article anyhow.

---The guy didn't hear what UiF and UK said..
---But UiF and UK "made strong cases"...
---Except, "specific arguments for or against Miami never reached the floor"...

So...sure...Florida tried to get the SEC to talk about expansion.

It's like when someone pretends they are actually going to fight someone when another person is physically restraining them. It's all for show.

But, sure, a few SEC schools wanted to discuss expansion. And does anyone know why this was even POSSIBLY a discussion point just after WWII? Because just BEFORE WWII (1940), Sewanee had LEFT the SEC. So the 13-team SEC was down to 12-teams, which is where they stayed until GaTech and Tulane dropped out in the 1960s.

Correct. I was looking for your reasons on the SEC vs B1G - specifically knowing you are genuinely concerned for the University as a whole…

In a battle of two superpowers and roughly equal money, I’ll take the B1G…, but I can see the allure of the SEC for current athletics and distance to away games for some folks…

My preference would be to beat UF, FSU and ND next year and join the next conference structure with or without them as Miami being winners, so they can sulk indefinitely if it must be..

We bought up many of VT's tickets in 2017 based on the crowd.

Before that I remember them traveling well until 2013 or so. After that they've lost some interest.

Man, it must've been bonkers in the visitors section when Duke, BC, Syracuse, Pitt or Wake came to town?

FEAR. their selling point is playing in the SEC.

if we join the SEC the Gator is dead. if we whoopped them just 3 years in a row (and we would) they would become as relevant USF.

that is the real reason why UF is fighting us joining the SEC.

And UNC, and GT is actually the worst. There have been years where i did not see a single Yellow Belly in the parking lot.

The BiG 10 needs to Florida market. The SEC has growth areas (Florida, Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia). The Big 10 badly needs this as well.

Otherwise this "media market" advantage is going to evaporate year by year.

The more I think about it, this is our sell to the Big.

I like both the SEC and Big 10.

Ideally, the SEC would take both Miami and F$U, and I'd be thrilled, but I think that's fairly unlikely.

I think UM and F$U to the Big 10 is the best I can hope for.
I spent alot time with Big10 families this past week.

All of them said their boards (OSU, PSU, MSU, and Mich) are in agreement Miami is a Big10 top tier target along with UNC, UVA, and GT. All other schools (according to them) aren't Big10 material.
