rankings by themselves dont mean anything, you need to look deeper to see what is behind those rankings. defensive stats are no different than recruiting rankings. in 2008 randy shannon had a top rated recruiting class, but that meant nothing because he was unable to get anything out of them. we had a defense that was ranked in the bottom 5% this past year, but why did that happen? it happened because we were forced to rely on young kids that were undersized and inexperienced. those are two things that are typically not a recipe for defensive success. when you have that many young kids and are playing true frosh DEs that weigh 235 pounds, having vince lombardi as your DC wouldnt make a difference. last year was basically a throw away year on defense that was ugly then but will be good for the future

I'm not a D hater. I basically plugged my ears and covered my eyes when we were on defense last year.

That said. 120.....yeah 120 matters. 120 matters A LOT going into next season.

i disagree.

i dont think it matters at all. did being a top 25 defense in 2011 matter coming into this year? 120 only matters going into next year because we should have essentially the same group, but should be much improved

Who will be in our 2-deep next year that would never see the field for a top 15 defense? Kacy Rodgers is the only name that comes to mind. Every other player could conceivably crack the 2-deep for a lot of good defenses.

Our biggest issue last season was experienced depth, not a lack of talent.
 
This discussion is dead. Its been gone over so much its actually a bit nauseating.

If being **** near dead last on defense doesn't mean anything to you, then that's cool.

But yeah it means more IMO because its the same group. Improvements should be pretty obvious.

the real question is why were we ranked that low on defense? if you dont understand that there is more to it than just rankings, then thats cool

You don't get to be last without having multiple reasons, obviously.

I got a lot of faith heading into next year though. So many young guys were playing like champs even though most freshmen fade as the season goes along.

We are gonna be OK.

That being said, I expect both the players and staff to make progress and be better defensively next season.

Guys emphasize the 120 number to advance their own agenda. Doesn't sound as good as saying 70 something or 80 something. If we were 120th in scoring and 80th in total D, they'd be talking about the scoring rank.

Typically, folks refer to scoring defense and scoring offense when evaluating coordinators. How often do you hear a fan talk about average yards per game when evaluating their offense? Not too often. They always talk about points per game because that's how the game is scored.

I don't see anyone claiming D'Onofrio did a good job.

But people expecting him gone and getting a home run D coordinator hire that immediately turns around the defense are completely absurd. Like it or not, it's likely that Al Golden is hitching his wagon to D'Onofrio and we're stuck with him.
 
Lmao at more No D Ofrio apologists. The youth and inexperience is no excuse for how bad that defense was. Yeah it's not just about the defensive rankings, it's also about our opponents offensive rankings which were mostly mediocre. Yet No D Ofrio fielded the worst Canes defense since the leather helmet days.

He called every game like we had a 50 point lead and there were 5 minutes left.
 
I think our defense can improve by a TD next year. The schedule alone will improve the stats.

Games were the same defense should do better with points

FSU new QB
Bethune Cookman replaced by Savannah St who is a guaranteed shutout
UVA at home hard to imagine they get 41 points again on us
ND/KSU 92 points replaced by Florida, FAU
GT at home give up 36 on the road
Duke 45 points on the road this year we play them at home def should improve on that
Pittsburgh replaces NC ST who scored 37 on us
Wake replaces BC who scored 32 on us

Games where the same defense would do worse

USF-USF 9 pts
VT-VT 12pts
UNC-UNC 18 pts

also our defense was a lot better at home then the road ..our few good defensive games USF,UNC,VT,FSU all were at home only NC St torched us at home ..we have 8 home games next year

so I believe the same defense gives up 5 ppg less next year if we improve by a FG we give up 8 or so less points a game

nothing scientific just my feelings on the matter

Is it good, fucccck no. But it is total yards not scoring. I am more concerned with the actual issue...SCORING ON DEFENSE then the yards.

Again how many yards = 1 point?

I am not happy with the defense, in fact it makes me vomit at times, but still the Yards argument is utter bull ****. I am not defending the D, I am just asking that we discuss the real issue and not the red herring.

That is the only real way to do it.

Scoring Points and preventing points are what matters, I could give 2 $hits if we let up the most yards in the nation per game BUT BUT BUT held them to 15 points or less each game.
