Sun Sentinel profile on James Coley

I don't get why people are so worried about his changes. As if Golden, Mario, and Coley didn't have a long and specific talk about what the plan was.

If Jedd were here he'd be making some tweaks as well. Offenses need to continue to evolve and adjust to this years roster. Even with a kid like Duke... He's not going to run the same 10 plays he ran last year. We're going to innovate.

I'm excited.

First of all, I don't care what he and Mario discussed. It's not like Mario had the everlasting best interest of the University of Miami in mind.

Secondly, Coley's a complete wild card from a playcalling standpoint and the only thing we know for sure is that he's been mostly exposed to Jimbo Fisher's style and structure. How would you categorize FSU's offense lately? Did they perform above or below their talent level? Did they struggle against tough defenses? Did their physically talented QB fail to progress sufficiently?

What is he going to innovate? And, what are you basing it on? How can you have more answers than questions?

He can be great or he may suck, but I'm not sure what anyone would base it on.

Coley's a giant question mark. Anyone acting otherwise is just guessing. If he turns out to be a winner, then those guys can say "I told you so" when they had nothing upon which to base their original guess. Personally, I detest JimBozo's offense, so I hope to **** he doesn't try to run that puke here. But JimBozo's been his main mentor, so we shall see.

He's a question mark to us. But does that matter? As I said, Mario was his HC and was part of the process, and AG got to drill down with him and talk philosophy, playcalling, etc.

I'll tell you this, he's less of a question mark than Jeff Fisch was coming in, that's for sure. And that turned out to be a great hire by Golden.

I predict everyone who complainedthat we didnt run enough will complain we arent passing enough.

When Coley was at FIU, his offensive line was overmatched on a regular basis. There's not a lot you can do to look brilliant when your oline is complete trash. Thus the spread offense.

At FSU, they did a few things well. They got the backs involved in the passing game, and they ran the offense with a nice tempo. They didn't use the tight end at all (which would be a tragedy with our tight ends), and they didn't rely on their running game when they had the physically superior team. The tight end thing, I fear, may be a product of game plan. But the abandonment of the running game usually falls on the playcaller (Jimbo).

You're right that he's a question mark to us. He's also a question mark to Alshermond and to everyone else. Al's a smart dude, who hires good corches. But Coley is an unknown any way you slice it. He called plays for 1 year, and had miserable results, which is the same thing Jeff Fisch did at Minnesota. He and Jeff Fish were about equal gambles coming in. They were both equal gambles to Pat Nix too.

Coley can talk a great game and have a philosophy that meshes with Al's, but at the end of the day, calling plays as quickly as you need to call them with live bullets flying is a COMPLETELY different animal than interviewing or helping to put together a game plan during the week. I have a feeling Coley will be successful, but that's just a guess. He'd have to be historically bad to f#ck up all this talent on offense.

In my opinion, Coley is a bigger gamble than Fisch was because I question the type of offenses he's been exposed to. Fisch's exposure was more interesting to me. In the end, I wasn't a fan of Fisch's style, so I hope the inverse happens and I like Coley's style for our offense.

He's surrounded by talented weapons on his side of the ball, I'm excited to see what happens. Hopefully we can out athlete most of our competition (offensively) this year, so even if he's not that good, we'll still produce. Either way, all we can do is wait until kickoff, because playing the game on paper doesn't matter.

Lu you don't feel that Coley took at least some of his offensive philosophy from the two years he worked with Saban? Certainly, he was junior and that was a while ago, but he's at least been exposed to different offensive philosophies. Perhaps he ran what Jimbo wanted him to run at FSU. I don't know because I haven't read up on that. I liked Fisch as an OC and felt we'd have a really good year with him this season, but I wasn't a fan of all the trick plays. I'd rather see us run it until they stop it and play action.

As it stands I'll give Coley at least part of the credit for FSU averaging 39 points a game last season, and I admit I'm excited to see what he'll do with our offense.

I disagree that he is less of a question mark than fisch was. Fisch was highly respected in nfl circles. Notwithstanding his less than stellar tenure at Minnesota, fisch had proven himself to be a rising star when golden pulled him. I for one am concerned about Coley, bc I believe fisher has underperformed for several years running, and coley was his disciple. Hopefully, he'll go in a different direction than dumbo.

Jeff Fisch might have been a "rising star", but he was a big question mark because the only other time he had called plays he was a devout failure. Until a dude does it with the live bullets flying a million miles per hour they'll always be a question mark. Jeff did a good job here at times. I'm not as sold on him as many others are, but he did some good things. I hope Coley's better.
