Spring Transfer Portal

No it doesn’t..as much as I hate to admit it the OhSt, Bama, UGA, NotreLame model is what Cristobal is appealing to..NOT YOUR view of what the model is because even that will change. Of the past 10-15 years those schools have followed suit & been cream of the crop in most years. They aren’t grabbing 15-20 kids in the portal (nor probably have they ever) because that’s not how you sustain your position.

So they didn’t build pre portal foundations?

my issue isnt with the portal recruiting...its with the message
1. "we will be very active in the portal - 5-7 guys, 6-8 guys" even our own insiders are given this message and spit it back ad nauseum
2. "we will only take legit guys - not just bodies"
3. the portal is made up mostly of guys who couldnt crack the two deep...there are exceptions but the majority are just that - bodies
4. ergo..."we won't take many guys from the portal" lol

why not just come out and say "we will be very active in the portal but only want guys that are starter material, so we'd need to have hope to get lucky - and depending on position, we might want you to be backup" :D

Looking at portal I see a few players that could help.

Bear Alexander-but reports are he acts like a **** who doesn't like going to class

Storm Duck-would be 2nd transfer in past 4 months

Wyoming OL-But would he start here? I am not sure. He is looking I'm sure for a starting spot

I know people want to say we need a WR, but a few things.

I think Young, X, and George are going to perform really well. I don't think their is a slot WR in portal that is better than X. I don't think their is a 6'5 WR in portal who would beat out Young. George has the talent, it's about maturing, focusing, and working hard at his craft. You could bring someone in to push him, but these portal cats are wanting a guaranteed starting spot IMO.

So yes a WR to bolster competition and depth is ideal, but what portal WR wants to provide competition and depth? That's the issue.

Coaches and fans want players for depth! Players don't like being depth they want to play.

QB-TVD
RB-Chaney/Parrish/Fletcher/CJ
TE-Arroyo/Skinner/Cam/Riley Williams
WR-Young
WR-Restrepo
WR-George
OL-Zion/Samson
OL-Cohen
OL-Lee
OL-Rivers/Cooper
OL-Mauigoa/Rivers

DE-Mesidor/Bain
DL-Taylor/Moten
DL-JHH/Deen
DE-Harvey/Kelly
LB-Mauigoa
LB-Bissanthe
NB-Couch/Harris
CB-Devante Brown
CB-Porter
S-J. Williams
S-Kam

What portal RB wants to be part of a 3-4 man rotation? That's what we need for depth

What WR wants to compete for a starters role with George, that's what we need

What big but athletic DT wants to jump in Tia rotation as that's what we need?

We need a high end starting CB

We need a 3rd safety
A high quality RB starts here. A half decent WR or CB walks backward into a starting role.

We actually have found some difference makers this cycle. Last cycle was brutal. The problem is that we need many more and time is running out.

Mauigoa-starter
Brown-starter
Lee-starter
Cohen-starter
McCormick-starter in Run sets
Deen-possible starter
Robert-Special Teams starter

I don't know why fans think Mario hasn't been successful in the portal. We've brought in excellent talent so far.

There are really two problems right now, unrelated to past performance in the portal. First is that despite all the kids we've pulled, we still have massive holes and need more to move from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 win team with high confidence. The second is that despite 2K kids having entered the portal, there aren't enough high-character + high-talent sure bets at our positions of need. So we're picking through someone else's trash trying to find that untouched filet mignon. It's an unpleasant process.

I also think some insiders on here gave us the impression we had backchannels into some guys that would hit the portal and that hasn't happened yet. I distinctly remember discussion of an RB we'd be happy with. I think that got our hopes up, but right now we're still scratching our balls wondering where we'll end up when the music stops.

There are no high quality rbs in the portal and probably none will enter. We just need a rb who can play doesn’t have to be a clear cut starter type

I admit I’m probably impatient when it comes to portal recruiting 😂

But dang when you hear that we’re going to look dramatically different come fall and don’t see movement (from a non-insider perspective), to myself I’m thinking **** what’s going on
Fair representation how most feel. It doesn’t mean changes aren’t coming, however (no insider just patiently waiting for next week).

Bunch of big teams have spring games today: Bama, South Carolina, LSU, OU, etc. let’s see how the portal looks by Monday before we freak out.

I think he just signed out of JUCO, no portal? But still an acquisition outside of high school recruiting
It’s still a valid example. It doesn’t matter whether talent acquisition occurs via the Portal or JC. The key is identification and development. Mario and company hit more often than they miss. You captured it in an earlier post.

My only criticism is we should targeting more difference makers and not depth players. If you bring in a player who becomes a starter, the incumbent immediately becomes your backup. That’s how you create quality depth and accelerate talent across the roster. A contributing factor to our roster management concerns, however, is the limited availability of high-quality talent in the Portal (as opposed to poor evaluation).

Do we have confirmation from anyone that has 100% knowledge that Mario and/or the ex- MSU staffer is being indecisive on portal takes?

Because as effective as Mario is with recruiting, this idea that he handles portal recruiting in an indecisive way just doesn't add up.

I mean just on the surface level, it appears easier to sell HS recruits on being part of a restoration of Miami football....whereas portal guys have been through the recruiting phase and present a different challenge in getting them to buy what you're selling. Especially older and more experienced guys who may have 1 year of eligibility and need a sure-fire program that will win and get them in the NFL as a higher draft pick.

Does any think that could be Fields spot eventually, or larger role ? Because this msu dude move funny. Or is it really a MC timing issue ?
Nothing happens without Mario. This MSU dude had no issues when Mel Tucker was making decisions. Based on that and what we’ve seen in the staff hiring process, along with in-game clock management, I think we can deduce where the hold-up is.

Unless- Alonzo in the process is causing the delay but I doubt that.

What if it comes down to guaranteed play time? A transfer could be more demanding than a recruit. Mario might not want to placate that. Maybe Manny promised the moon. Sometimes he even delivered.
