i know it's being reported that he doesn't want to move to Safety but just off the top of my head a nice DB group would be
SS- Brown
FS- poyser
CB- OJ
CB- Lucas
think that could be a playoff DB group

In his first full year as a starter McCoy allowed 11 pressures and just one sack on the year. There was five straight games in which McCoy did not allow either a sack or a pressure in 2024.

So in 822 career snaps he has given up just 12 negative players in the passing game. From a pass blocking stand point McCoy is the best IOL on this roster and it's not even close.

He was a high school tightened ,so he needed more time to gain the size and strength to be a force in the run game but he still held his own in the run game in the 2024 season. All reports have been that he is much better and stronger this season and if that is true, there isn't a IOL on this roster, outside of Cooper, who should be on the field over McCoy.
What year was McCoy a full time starter? What am I reading?

From Canesport, on Hetherman's presser today

Today it was Hetherman’s turn to talk about his vision for this Hurricanes defense … and what he’s learned about his personnel from the first two days of spring practice.

“Day 1 kind of came out, had to play a little faster, communicate better,” Hetherman said. “Day 2 (today) we saw some strides, guys are starting to communicate, guys are starting to play faster, we’re starting to swarm to the football. Every day we talk about getting a little bit better, making sure today we are better than we were yesterday.”

Hetherman says the end goal is to “find out who are the best 11.”

“It’s always going to be all about us,” he said. “I don’t care what team we’re playing, where we’re playing them, it’s always `Who are we, what’s our identity?’ And it’s going to be how do we get the best players on the field. So right now there’s a lot of guys playing multiple positions. … Everyone is going to move around because I want to see how fast we can be and how fast we can attack the point of attack.
“Right now it’s positionless defense – everyone is put in different spots, we’re teaching them fundamentals and techniques right now and then we’ll find out where everyone fits as we get closer to the season.”
As much as I want to drink kool aid, this is nearly word for word identical coach speak for every single new DC we've had here since ive followed.

We'll see what happens come game time.

My eyes tell me that he had an entire offseason to win the LG battle in 2024 and he lost. My eyes also tell me that he has had opportunities the last 2 years to vie for an open position and they habe chosen to pursue alternative options. My eyes also tell me he is not one of the top 5 when he is in the actual games. Outside of that I'm not sure what to base it upon. Hence me asking.
and what do your eyes tell you about injuries?

CB is the hardest position, you should always have your best at CB lol. And we’re better off at safety than CB. With Poyser and Patterson along with Day… they’ll be good. If anything, Damari Brown should move to safety. That would make more sense. But you right… our opinions are just opinions.
And you make some good points...As a shared with another poster, Brown would be a good solution for safety and Lucas stays at corner (preferably) but I thought Brown kinda balked at playing safety so that why I throw in Lucas at safety.

Now, I will say that I'm high on Z Patterson because he definitely has the talent but he needs to grow a lot from last years showings.

In this case, Ethan O'Connor comes off the bench.. I'm not arguing with you (this is a good problem) but I don't think there are 2 better CBs on the roster better than him

Between OJ and a healthy Brown, and our transfer additions (O'Connor, Poyser, Lucas, and Brantley) we will have a legit competition in out DB room.

To me, if Xavier Lucas can play SS/Star/Boundary Safety (whatever you want to call it) this defense could be special.

I think/hope we start the season looking like this..

CB - O'Connor
CB - OJ
SS - Lucas
FS - Poyser
Nickel - Brantley
