Spring Spring PractiSe 15: Spring Game!!!!!!!

For real brother. I live in Oregon and I’d like to be able to help steer some of these top kids in Oregon to Miami. Not all of them prefer to stay out west like many on CIS thinks.

A good friend of mine from high school Ryan McNeil is good friends with Rumph. Maybe that can be my in with the coaching staff.
Oregon sucks.

Actually I don’t care that much about it, but the drama was dying down and I’ve been doing some work around the house and am ready for the antics…

Good work steering kids to other opportunities!

- Thad & Parrish looked good
- TE’s looked great; Arroyo, Brantley, Mammarelli & Skinner can all play well & will thrive in this offense & that’s all before Mallory comes back, most loaded position group on the team
- Run Blocking looked solid; OL still needs depth
- Should’ve added another WR out the Portal back in Jan-Feb; hope to God we can convince Ty Harrell to consider coming back home

- Interior DL is small, still need more bodies on the DLine, adding Mesidor & Coleman would be nice pickups, Dorlus needs to hurry the fck up if he’s planning on coming down here
- Lichtenstein, Davis & Moss looked good
- LB’s... Should be adding Caleb Johnson so that’s good
- Safety group looks good, adding JoJo will make them a nice young group with tons of upside
- Isaiah Dunson should be a starter at Boundary
- Couch is a natural Nickel; interested to see what they do with Porter Jr when he gets on campus, he can play outside & inside
- Excited to see Jaden Harris get in the mix in Fall camp

Spring games don’t mean that much, just fun to watch for fans, gonna be a long season, still a work in progress.

Here’s my thing- we had three guys with juice last year, and all of them had a ton of 1-yard gains and losses. Thad will get you no less than 3 every time and hit a couple chunk runs when defenses get tired.

If he loses a few pounds, he’s a 1K back imo.
A lot of that was scheme and who we had pretending to block on interior.

Not an overreaction, but this definitely looks like a team a yr away. We have some nice, young pieces that we’ll build around, but we’re still too small, & not explosive at key positions.

Here’s my fake:

The TE room looks outstanding, & we’re still missing Mallory.

The OL had some good protection & run blocking moments, but my caution is clearly the DL is not elite & struggled mightily, yet there were moments the OL got smoked. Something to keep an eye on.

Speaking of The DL, it needs an infusion of grown man talent.
-Moss is going to be a problem, but he’s too light in the pants right now.
-LT has the potential, but he, too, needs to gain some grown man weight on him & work on his motor.
-Was really impressed by what I saw from Lichtenstein; thought he was our most “consistent” disrupter.
-Also liked what I saw from Davis, however he was off sides on a couple of his “1st steps.” Lol. I love his explosiveness. He looks like a 3rd down specialist at this point, but would also love for him to develop a spin move w/ that 1st step.

Our WR room leaves something to be desired from a vertical standpoint.
-Love X, he’s just a 1st down machine. Guy just know how to get open. A QBs best friend
-While I’ve been high on Key, he didn’t separate himself today. Dropped a couple of contested catches that hit him squarely in the hands.
-Jacolby, while fluid, doesn’t stretch the field.
-B Smith appears to be a flat, crossing pattern problem, but again, I don’t see stretch fear.
-Forgot Ladson was on the field & that’s not a good thing. He looked like his predecessor that wore that same #.
-All of that led to our deep ball game being pretty much non existent. The rapport that TVD had w/ Rambo MUST be established w/ another WR this off season or we’ll be a horizontal team vs. vertical.

LBs………….

Moving on to the secondary
-Liked what I saw from the 2ndary.
-Dunson looks like a player
-A Williams is a player, good range
-Liked what I saw from Gil; that’s what I expected from him when he committed here. Hoping that energy & IQ carries over to the season

All in all, I expected to see some flat moments, some improved areas, & some areas we’ll take a step back in. Again, we have an inconsistent roster due to faulty recruiting + new staff, new language, new concepts, new everything. It’s extremely hard to come into a situation that Rolle so eloquently pointed out & change it over night. ****, JJ came in after the ‘83 title, implemented a whole new system & we know what happened in ‘84, & that’s coming into a strong culture.

Let’s see how this portal situation shakes out, but as of 04/16/2022, this looked like an 8-9 win team. It looked more 2016 Canes vs. 2017 & that’s OK.

Edit: Forgot RBs. Thad is a thumper, but I did see him go down rather easy on several drives. I liked Parrish coming out, but I can see why his PT grade dropped from a 4 to a 3 star. He looks better suited as a 3rd down/rotational back vs. an every down back. If Rooster & Chaney return to form, the RB room is the least of my worries. Btw, who’s that Perry kid?? Kudos to him for making the best of his opportunity.

Half of the timeline had Thad as a spring game MVP/standout and other half acting like he ain't ****. Hilarious stuff.

This x1000 spot on. Hoping the guys injured at LB are difference makers cuz my god another yr of Flagg/Steed is more 6-7 win than 8-9.
