Some UL Card fall camp video/info

I know Petrino is a great coach, but how does he get people to believe in him? He's lied everywhere he's gone, from owners to school presidents and ADs, to his family. Yet somehow he retains credibility with people.

He wins

He wins and then leaves a **** storm behind for the next 4-5 years

Living in Arkansas it has been a pleasure to see the **** storm he left behind. The Pigs may win 5 this year. And that is only because the have UAB and Nicholls st on the schedule. They got a shot at A2M, MSU an Ole ****. Collins and Kirkland may never see a winning season.

One more reason to hate Louisville is how badly they treated Howard.

Sorry I can't let this go. Louisville has NEVER treated Howard badly. He is revered in the City of Louisville. Just watch how loud he is cheered if he is at PJCS in a few weeks.

You think Howard wanted to leave Louisville?
It was his home town. He inherited an abysmal program. Louisville was actually in worse straits than Miami was when Howard took over.

Howard wanted to win the NC for his home team, but wasn't given the support he needed by the school president.
He wanted Louisville to join a major conference but was blindsided when the school president up and joined a second tier conference, Conference USA, guaranteeing that Louisville would never contend for a National Championship.
How about the on campus stadium Howard lobbied for?

I'm sure the city of Louisville loves Howard. For their sake it would have been nice if the school loved him.

I just rewatched the bowl game, and dear lord we looked like a flaming dumpster fire. **** poor play in EVERY phase of the game, except for the safety. O-line sucked, d-line sucked, DB's got torched the whole game. I counted a total of 1 good play from our DB's and that was Gunter on a short pass to the sideline. Snickers was flustered the whole game and really made only two decent throws, one to Walford for 32 yards, and one to Coley close to the goal line.

Overall we looked SLOW as **** on defense, I didn't see the speed claimed by Burns (track star), Howard (4.46), et al.

If they come in and get good QB play, I don't think we will win this one.

Hey, a post based on observation of actual prior results.

What a refreshing change.

I know right.. And FSU is going to play Auburn again in the MNC game cause things don't change from year to year.
God some of our fans have the reasoning of 1st graders.

The on campus stadium came in the form of the present PJCS. There were some modifications to it as the original rendering had two open endzones with double decks on both sides. The fans united to keep the "Crunch Zone" intact which prided itself on making noise in the endzone so it was modified to enclosing the southern end. Yes, Louisville joining C-USA was what ultimately caused Howard to leave when the Oklahoma job came open but Louisville fans couldn't fault him for that as Oklahoma had more history. There was no major conference looking to have Louisville join so that is why they joined C-USA. Howard wanted to go independent. That in no way was treating Howard badly. The University had to make an important decision and moved on it. To this day, Howard often comes back for some home games and the University rolls out the red carpet and the fans give him standing O's.

Interesting read. Look forward to our first game in the ACC as a member. I hope it is a good game, we win, no one gets seriously hurt and both teams go on to have a good season afterward. I think this has the makings of a good rivalry so it is too bad we will only meet every few years. To those coming up for the game, check out Bardstown rd and Frankfort Ave for great food (Clifton's Pizza on Frankfort is a great start). Granville Inn on 3rd is also a great place for bar food and close to the stadium.

If we lose again to these dumb m*ther****ers, with their corny *** adidas gear and toothless fans, I will lose my sh*t.

I did LOL to this but I have to say their fans are cool, IMO. They have a nice city as well. The toothless fans part isn't true... we're playing L;Ville, not Kentucky, their rival. Kentucky fans are the ones who get that stereotype and for good reason.

As I understand it, Howard wasn't happy about them joining any conference and thought Louisville had a better chance of making it to a National Championship if they stayed independent. He was right, but you can't do that to the rest of the school's programs. There were not a lot of conferences, even then, that would take all of a schools programs except football.

Labor Day is going to be a breeze for the Cards. You guys get to see what offense is all about. Louisville by 21 in another blowout.

Yes , PLEASE don't associate us with the cayuts. They really don't have any football fans though. Good luck on the 1st and don't stomp on the bird, or it could get ugly.

Wow, you Miami folks really can't stop thinking about us Cardinals? LOL Too funny that someone says they hate that we're relevant! And then one says we're the worse fan base? Geez chill with the hate...Most Louisville fans actually love Miami, I know I pull for the Canes every year expect when we play them, it's a nice rivalry, I enjoy it more than our Kentucky rivalry but whoever said Louisville is a 6-6 team this year is pulling your legs, don't fall for that, this team will be wayyyy more explosive on offense because the coaching style of Petrino, he want's to put 70 points on the board every game and against certain foes he won't stop and I think he has harsh feelings for Miami along with Kentucky so I wouldn't be looking forward to playing us this year...we're a different team, better offensive attack and defense will have had all summer to prep for you after beating the breaks off you last year...you're really about to hate us after this year.

I agree. Their fans are cool, as long as they're winning. Let's make them uncool this time.

whats their run defense looking like? If Duke Gus and Yearby can churn out yards and we our QB only has to manage the game, we win

Thread on the Cards board talking about their scrimmage http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=17&f=2759&t=13056240

UL's Hometown newspaper's take on the scrimmage (By Jeff Greer) http://www.courier-journal.com/stor...rdays-louisville-football-scrimmage/14160465/

Saturday's full-squad scrimmage gave us more insight into where Louisville football stands just 16 days before its season opener against Miami on Sept. 1.

U of L coach Bobby Petrino seemed optimistic after the workout, saying that while there's obviously still work to do, Louisville "got a lot accomplished."

Here are five quick takeaways from this morning's scrimmage. We'll also have a full report of the exhibition and a positives/negatives comparison. But first, some thoughts:

1. The offense can move the ball -- fast. There was, once again, a major emphasis on pace. Not quite the no-huddle, rush-to-the-line type stuff, but still a heavy importance placed on quick communication, quick line up, quick snap, quick release. That speed made the defense look porous early on before a few late plays salvaged the rough defensive start. The offense never appeared rushed, and the running game fit right in with the vertical passing game. What I mean by that is the speed with which handoffs and bursts came, the backs got into their full pace after one move and ate up big chunks of yardage in flashes.

2. Communication's a work in progress. I'll touch on this more in the positives/negatives look, but there were still some kinks. There were a few either wrong routes or wrong throws that resulted in what should have been two interceptions but resulted in one. There were a few pre-snap penalties as well.

3. Floyd gives Louisville options.

Put Terell Floyd at safety and that position of need is stronger. Put him in the slot in the nickel formation and that allows impressive junior-college transfer James Sample, a former four-star high school prospect, to get on the field. And although Floyd himself got banged up a bit at practice today, if there are injuries at corner, he can go back there and help.

4. Chucky Williams may have earned some playing time. He spent some time in the spring with the first-teamers on defense, but the redshirt freshman from south Florida was mostly a backup in the first week of open practices. On Saturday, he was ever-present in the secondary, both in man or zone. He dropped an interception early on in the scrimmage, but it's hard to argue with his decision to look back at the right time and stop chasing his man on a poorly underthrown ball. He then snapped up a pick off a deflection later on and laid down the lumber on Eli Rogers on a red-zone pass. At 6-2, 200, he can either be a big, physical corner or fit in at safety.

5. Reggie Bonnafon has the potential to be a star. With freshman back LJ Scott and sophomore receiver James Quick as his main target, the Louisville native Bonnafon has been nothing short of exceptional for a freshman in his first college camp. Sure, he made a few mistakes today, but the guy who some thought should switch to receiver or another position seems very much like the next QB at Louisville after Will Gardner

Full transcript from Petrino's post-scrimmage press conf.

Overall thoughts

I thought we got a lot accomplished. We certainly have a long way to go, but as we watch the video, I know we're going to see some things that we really like and some things that we really need to clean up technically and some mental mistakes that we're going to have to make sure that we get taken care of, but there's a lot a lot there that we can really build on and a lot that we can correct.

Some of the day is not just how we do out in the scrimmage. We try to go through a game day, how we're going to go through the way we act in the training room, how we're going to go through how the locker room's gonna be. We had what we call a clap session, so we tried to get our players to learn and go through and let that run. Those things were well done. You can see that we have a lot of senior leadership and a lot of experience on the team. They took the field with good energy and went out and competed. Obviously we made some mistakes but overall I thought it was a good day.

On QBs

They really showed that they can play the game. We have to be more consistent. We made some msitakes. We had some protection issues. We didn't see certain blitzes come at times, but when we had things right and they were able to set their feet, they both can make the throws that you need to make. I thought Will (Gardner) executed pretty well for the most part. I tried to get him out of the game one time just to put pressure on Reggie (Bonnafon) to step in the huddle and jump in there with all the seniors and take over the huddle. He did a really nice job with it. I was impressed with his poise in doing that. Something you always try to do with a young guy is throw him in there one time.

On Bonnafon's 65-yard TD pass to Matt Milton

That was a great throw, right on stride. It was a great job by Milton, too. He ran the route exactly the way you want to, left him enough room on the sideline, showed his speed and ability to run down the ball. We tried to throw the ball deep a number of times and that certainly was the best one.

On Bonnafon being ahead of schedule (he's a freshman)

A little bit, yeah. He really is. He's very poised. He's a very good student of the game. I'm happy with the way he's performed in camp.

On Michael Dyer

Michael Dyer's had a really good camp. He's running real well. He's as quick and as physical as he was since we've been here. He's seeing things. He's giving us a lot of energy out there. He did get his knee hit, and it's just a bruise, but there's swelling in it and (head trainer Kyle Johnston) decided to hold him for the rest of the scrimmage, but we anticipate it'll be fine.

On Dominique Brown

I like the way Dom Brown's camp went and how he's performing. He's big and physical. We're going to have to run the ball. That's gotta be a good part of our offense.

On the tight ends

They're doing a really good job. Gerald (Christian)'s a guy who came back in great shape, as fast and strong as I've seen him. He's very, very reliable with his hands and ability to get down the middle. (Keith) Towbridge has really improved since spring -- his ability to block and his toughness has really improved, which we really need.

On the offensive line

You've always gotta watch the video, especially when you're calling plays, because I'm looking at the defense and the secondary and how the play ends and not really focusing on the offensive line. I know that we had time, we had some good holes running the ball, but as far as individually looking at them, I have to watch the video.

On the defense

We're way ahead of where we were in spring. I went back last night getting ready for this and watched all our scrimmages and spring game and we're way ahead of where we were. We're better at safety. We're better at the nickel position. It's always hard to really understand how the defense does until you watch the video, too, because I'm trying to beat 'em, calling plays and moving the ball. There were a number of times when they had stops and you'd be off the field, but you go over again.

I didn't like giving up the big plays, particularly with the No. 1 defense in there, so we've gotta improve on that. We are going to be able to rush the passer. Our defensive front is very active. It can really come off the ball. They really know how to attack protections.

On linebackers and Keith Brown

He's very impressive. He's tough. He's quick. He has a great what we call FBIs, which are football instincts. I think he's a very good football player. He's going to help us a lot.

On special teams

We have to do a better job in our return game. That's what we'll really focus on this next week, staying on our blocks. We've got guys with great speed and good ability to cut, but we've been splashing off blocks a little bit and we have to do a better job on blocking. The specialists have performed well in camp. I've been happy with what I've seen from there.

On tempo

We mix it up a little bit. We still like to huddle and gain some advantage by huddling. One of the things we tried to do today was, after a big play, that 40-second clock really comes into play. To me, that's been the biggest difference on the 40-second clock, when you have a big play and your offensive linemen have to waddle their way down there. It takes time off of that clock. We were working hard on that. That was a big emphasis today, getting down there after a big play and getting in a formation and running the plays we wanted to.

On the two-minute drill

It took us a while to get going. The "two" offense didn't do a good job of it. You've gotta get that first completion. That's huge. It's good for us to see all the situations that came up. There at the end was a little bit interesting because it actually would have been a 10-second runoff. We could have let the clock run down and kick the field goal with three seconds left. Everyone will learn a lot from that situation.

On the safeties

Holliman's playing better. Moving Floyd in there has really helped. Sample's addition and his maturity, the way he studies and prepares for practice -- he's fun to watch practice because he goes hard in practice and he's a very good tackler. That helps us a lot.
