Some thoughts on the game

- This game was the opposite of Kansas State in one respect: Miami whooped Georgia Tech's *** up front. Morris didn't get touched all day, the backs ran for 5.4 yards per carry, and the team had 609 total yards. Very rarely do you win a game where you are -2 in the turnover department and play poorly on special teams. The offensive line is further along than I thought they'd be, and they were the biggest reason for yesterday's win.

- The defensive line also had a nice performance. The sturdiness of the defensive tackles against Georgia Tech's dive play allowed the defense as a whole to keep the option (relatively) under control.

- Stephen Morris left many throws on the field and still had the fifth-highest yardage total in Miami history. His fundamentals and technique need to be more consistent, but he showed things yesterday you can't teach. The fact that he hit a deep ball on his first drive (after weeks of criticism) and came back to go 91 yards after that missed field goal revealed a ton about his mental toughness and resilience.

- We saw glimpses of this during last year's fourth-quarter rallies, and it was obvious after the Lewis injury: the unity and love on this team is tangible. Check out these tweets from Shaiy Howard (whose son, Tracy, was rumored to be disgruntled) and Alonzo Highsmith (who does not bite his tongue when it comes to his Alma Mater).

everything i thought about Golden was solidified when the Miami player laid on the ground in pain!

I can tell Al Golden loves this program and the kids! If u dont want ur son to play 4 this guy!! U are crazy

Why wouldn't I won't my son to play for Golden!!

- On a related note, one thing that I was worried about was how these inner-city kids would take to Golden's constant Tony Robbins-style quotes and buzzwords. Looks like I was worried about nothing. In fact, Dorsett, Crawford, Duke and Highsmith embraced Golden's brick-by-brick quote so much that they changed their Twitter handles to "Brick By Brick." Seems silly, but IMO it's very telling.

- The most impressive thing Golden and staff have shown so far is the ability to rehabilitate players. We saw it last year with Wieclaw, Streeter and Jacory. This year, it's Brandon McGee, Davon Johnson and Ben Jones (who made the key block on the game-tying TD). The way he stuck with these guys shows a lot about both his ability to develop players and his respect for each kid on the roster.

- Coming out of spring, I was worried about how Rashawn Scott would translate his chemistry with Ryan Williams (a soft tosser) to Stephen Morris. He is still struggling with some of those bullets, but we see flashes of his athleticism every game.

- I want to say this a program-changer, but it is nothing without a win next week. The NC State game scares the **** out of me for many reasons, but here's the main one: Glennon is a below-average quarterback when pressured, but a first-round pick with a clean pocket. Miami's defense has made many quarterbacks very comfortable in the past few years. Hate to put this on a freshman, but Tyriq McCord may prove to be a key player next week.

D, Davon Johnson just might the slot WR UM hasn't had since Collier, he has a natural feel inside and catches and runs well. As for Rashawn, he reminds me a bit of Horace Copeland, big, tall rangy guy, who will drop a few but will make big plays

As for the kids buying-in, thing is, those inner city kids( many of whom grew up in one-parent homes) may be yearning for a guy like Golden. They've been looking for a certain type of structure and leadership all their lives from a male perspective. I think Golden is very JJ-esque in this regard. What happened yesterday I think only solidifies his standing and stuff like how he was vindicated versus Drew Rosenhaus in the draft spotlight his credibility

Also, I know Highsmith a little bit, and you're right, he doesn't BS. If he doesn't mean it, he wont say it.

And next week is key, I dont think the Canes have had a 3 game winning streak under Golden. Well, next week is at home and all this momentum would go to waste if they can't capitalize. I really hope there isn't a GAtech hangover

Finally, if the kids dont believe in the benefit of U-Tough, now, they never will

Goldens force of personality and love for the program will hold us together during the coming NCAA mess. For nothing else, I am thankful we've got him to guide us through what otherwise could be a recruiting disaster.

Well said on everything D. Great post.

I really like your part about rehabilitating players. I also still have really high hopes for Scott mainly because of what you posted. We have seen some guys make huge strides especially since McDonald has been involved and Scott has the physical tools we need in this WR group so hopefully he can just keep working at it.

Our Oline definitely looked physical. Ben Jones came in and they didn't miss a beat. Seantrel played some at LT and did good. So happy with yesterdays result still

It is really nice to see davon johnson get his chance and step up.

Golden is all in on this team, the program, and the kids. That commands respect. It's easy to say that's always the case, but it's just not true.

Whether this win is a program changer depends on what you think that means. This team has a ways to go to become a top ten team again. And the decline has been longer than when butch came in. But for these kids and this staff, it's a program changer because it validates their work and belief in themselves, each other and their plan. Thats true whether they win next week or not. Fans may look to nc stte to validate what we want to see (i will, i admit), but for the payers and staff that buys into the brick by brick mentality, this game was a big brick, full stop.

Great insight in this post. There are some subtle observations in there that have serious ramifications going forward.

The problem I see with so many of our fans is that they judge this team from week to week almost from a play to play perspective.

This is NOT the way this group needs to be evaluated. From where we are/were, there is a much bigger picture that needs to be the focus. I'm in no way saying you shouldn't comment on plays or criticisms are unwelcome, but there are bigger things to look at than errant throws by Morris, or lack of penetration on a certain run play.

D Money,

Good write up but I have a few questions. NC State scares me also.

-Do you have any word on when Porter may be available. Is he even practicing?

-Who is next in for the Wide our Rotation. Is Lockhart a redshirt or is he playing special teams

So far it looks like

1. Hurns
2. Dorsett
3. Scott
4 Davon

Who gets more reps? Lockhart or Waters?

Even though Miami threw 50-something times, still felt like they pounded the rock and played hard nose football. If Morris can consistently make throws this offense would be NICE.

If there is such a thing as a potential let down game, NC state is a prime candidate. Will be interesting to watch. I just hope the fans show up. Normally I don't care but I think the team has earned it.

No ETA on Porter, I would still say indefinite. Interesting that the two DTs on the fourth down play were King and Grimble.

Waters is next man up.

So that was King out there?! I was wondering who #67 was. I have at&t and none of our data would work in the stadium to log online. He played very well with the snaps he was given. Grimble seems like he is starting to get into a groove.

D, I just spoke with Alonzo Highsmith, he's a huge Golden advocate. I asked him( based on what AJ has told him) whats the difference between Shannon and Golden. His answer was simple,"hard work.''

Golden is all in on the program. Whether it be cradling Lewis or being practically in tears in his post-game interview on the field, he's fully immersed and you can tell. I don't know if he'll win big at UM, but I like what I'm seeing and the sense that I have that the program is in the right hands with him. He talks about having a young team, but I also see a young coach. There's going to be growing pains both with the players and with Golden I suspect. So long as there is growth with those growing pains, I think we're heading in the right direction. I think we'll see this play out favorably towards the end of next year and onwards. Personally, I'm okay with being patient with the process so long as the process is actually playing out to Miami's favor. So, be it a year or two, I'm okay because the foundation is being rebuilt so that we can not only win but reload rather than rebuild in the future.

I'd add intelligence and the ability to speak the English language, but who's counting.
