OK, so some quick thoughts on the #Canes victory over FSU last night at Hard Rock
- Solid, methodical, measured win by Miami as they weren't particularly explosive in the throw game. But they were in control throughout and came out on top 36-14. Good teams win, great teams cover, right? His numbers weren't great, but I thought Cam Ward played a very controlled and mature game. He didn't get greedy and he understood that this FSU offense was limited (and really just flat out bad)
The only way Miami could lose this game was to give it away with turnovers. He seemed to hold onto the ball a bit too long at times but extending plays is part of his game. It wasn't the sustained fireworks many expected or the explosive knockout that many wanted. If this was a prizefight, Miami was Mike 'the Body Snatcher' McCallum on Saturday night. They just chipped away to the body and just broke down the Noles late.
It wasn't their best game offensively, but they still got over 200 yards-plus passing and rushing vs FSU. They still produced 31 first downs ,over 440 yards and had the ball for 35 minutes. The only thing really was missing were the big plays in the throw game
- Never thought I'd be at a game where Elijah Arroyo threw more touchdown passes than Ward.
- The Noles defensive front played hard and well(at least as it came to rushing the passer), which is no surprise. If there was a game where guys like Darrell Jackson were going to play hard it was this game. Jackson will be a guy who NFL teams will really debate about his effort and production prior to the draft. The Noles got five sacks and pressured Cam several other times. Thomas and Cypress are a good set of corners. Im not completely surprised by how this game played out. I know it's a cliche, but rivalry games are different and oftentimes more difficult.
But they also played a defense in way to not get completely blown out. In that sense they did gain a moral victory in what is now a 1-7 season.
- If Im Mike Norvell I keep going into this youth movement with underclassmen. There is an old saying -- if you're going to be bad, be young.
- Great to see Damien Martinez have another strong outing. He's running with some real authority and power, and he's become a reliable outlet receiver. He and Fletcher have become a really effective 1-2 punch, and Ajay Allen, watching him from the endzone seats, you can really see how good his feet are on the couple carries he got.
- Miami's defense needed a game like this. Lets be clear, they didn't play the 1999 Rams, but for the most part they played a pretty sound game, overall. It's a good way to build some confidence on the back end. They still give up the edge and lose contain more than a coach would probably like to see. But this defense will be at it's most effective when they are allowed to play from ahead and can rush the passer.
- So Miami snaps a three game losing streak to FSU. No matter how bad they are this year, it's always good to win rivalry games. After living through the five game losing streak in the beginning of the Butch Davis era, and then the 7 game skid to the Noles from 2010 to 2016, you learn not to take this stuff for granted.
- This was probably the most muted Miami-FSU game Ive attended, with the least amount of Nole fans in attendance. Yeah, records matter. Very good crowd at Hard Rock last night. They announced a sell-out and it did look full. But to be honest, it wasn't the atmosphere of the 2017 Notre Dame madhouse. But still, a fun night.
- Miami is now 8-0 in year three of Mario Cristobal. You can argue that he's well ahead of schedule, at the same time you could say that things were accelerated by the acquisition of Ward. Both can be true. But this is exactly the type of season Cristobal needed to lay the foundation for the future of his tenure at UM.
I love the trajectory of this program. (Slams fist on table, and walks away from tweet)
