Some quick and easy takes from this season

People love to diss Caputo around here, but he took over a dumpster fire at GW and is 8-2 with a nice roster in his third year.

The E8 team was Caputo’s last full year but the F4 team was built around Wong, Miller, Poplar, and Bev and Omier and Pack were perfect fit plug and play pieces for the 5 out strategy of the E8 team.

Maybe Caputo deserves a little more respect than he gets on this board… the first time we underperformed preseason expectations was after he left.
Maybe ... as far as deserving more respect. He hasn't come close to leading GW to any sort of "breakthrough" season in the A10. Part of that is on GW but ,...

What about giving Shaka Smart another opportunity at this level? We know he is very good at the mid-major level. I honestly don’t know why it did not work for him at Texas, but he is killing it again with Marquette.

How long will they keep going with Coach L? The longer the wait, more the heat builds up to go with someone proven... away from the L tree.
We are in no man's land now

I jumped in about Caputo… but while I think Shaka Smart would be a home run:

1) we don’t have a vacancy (and we’re only one game into our conference schedule - a tough loss to a top-3 conference team); and
2) I doubt we could get Smart even if we wanted to (unless we absolutely backed up the brinks truck which is possible but unlikely)… he has a good thing going where he’s at and right now the big east is a better league than the acc.

Woah. I had no idea it was this bad. 15 straight P4 losses?

Shoooo-buddy. With the dollars they're spending to support this basketball program?

I honestly don't know the answer, but things don't look great. You lose most of your team and Bethea after this season as well.
Where is Bethea going?

Lots of crazy talk going on here, especially considering we're just a week into December. Someone's gotta tell some of the fine folks on this board that February & March is when we need to be playing our best ball, not in December.

I'm as disappointed as any of you as to how this season has started. However, for folks to be calling of Coach L's head and talking about replacements is *** backwards.

I know some of you think this is the same team from last year. It's not! We got 8 new guys in the rotation. Be nice to give them some leeway. Last season's team is last season's team. Let's give this group a chance to figure things out before we bury them. GO CANES!!!

Look I understand the support for coach L. It’s between him and Ham as the most important and influential coaches in program history. There may be a statue of coach L in the future or they may name the court after him. He’s been that important.

But it’s ok to admit that time has passed him by. It happens to everyone at some point. You can see the downward spiral going on between this season and last season.

L will rightfully go out on his terms and we will just have to wait it out but in my opinion it’s just a matter of time at this point. The team and program are not coming back under coach L.

And it is a message board. I am as big a Coach L fan as there is, but I don't think it is unfair to discuss the potential next coach at L's age (record aside).

Why is Grant said to be a popular choice with boosters? -- nevermind -- of course - he was born in Miami and went to high school there --- yep -- clearly need a Miami guy.

Because Shaka started to recruit at a 5-star level at Texas, and abandoned his style of play, to suit the 5 stars, he never used to get. Big Shaka fan, loved to watch his teams, before he got to Texas. At Marquette, he is rolling with his style.

I love Coach L and while it's true we tend to get better as the season goes on, we have been truly awful since last season. This isn't your typical slow start to the season when we're currently at the bottom of the ACC and handed a 1-7 Charleston team their first win over a power conference school since 2019. Even last year we hadn't lost 4 games until January.

The one common denominator to last year is that Pack is the PG. It's time to take the ball out of his hands because he's killing you at both court ends. As the PG is he not putting enough pressure on the other team's D. He's hurt and can't take his man off the dribble to create for others. On the defensive end, he can't guard the other team's PG, forcing the entire team to help and create open opportunities for the other team. L should play him as a scorer off the bench in limited minutes.

Divine, Swartz, Staton-McCray, Johnson, and Kidd should be in the starting lineup.

I'd be interested to see what the team looks like if you put the ball in Bethea's hands like he played in HS. Could he be the 2nd PG on this team instead of Pack or Blackmon? IMO, Pack, Blackmon, and Swartz are shooters. You bring these guys off the bench to shoot threes and get points. Staton-McCray and Cleveland are more glue guys or utility guys. You need these dudes to get into passing lanes and create pressure on the other team. Then just use Djobet and Johnson-Arigu for frontcourt depth.

And just forget about playing Pack and Blackmon together. Neither of them can stay in front of someone and other teams are exploiting them for easy buckets every time they are on the court.

What I love about both the hoops board and the baseball board on cis is you can tell that people know the game. And that is always highlighted in the discussions.

Pack as primary ball handler being the issue plaguing this program Is one of the most obvious things I have ever seen and yet here we are a full season and a half later and L still doesn’t see it? I refuse to believe that and am forced to believe it’s a money thing or a guarantee thing contract wise when he signed here.

At this point, I’m not convinced Brandon Johnson should be getting minutes. Maybe run Matt at 3 and Staton McCray at the 4. Or run three guards and figure out the 4. Huie?

Yes, Johnson rebounds. But he seems incapable of doing much other than shooting 3s. Plus, I’m not convinced he’s a good enough passer to play a stretch 4. Of course, this assumes Kidd is on the court at the same time

Nigel Pack playing PG is 100% the biggest factor in the struggles of this program. He is just not that player. He can't stop the ball so the other team is just getting whatever shots they want. Giving up 80+pts every game isn't a recipe for winning. Offensively we aren't getting what he is good at and thats catch and shoot. He is not an off the dribble player and Lord knows he can't finish at the rim.
