Admittedly, my Panic fandom peaked a while back, though it is also how I become so close with a mutual friend of ours. We traveled to see a good amount of shows together in law school. Phish has always been there for me.You seem to be a big Phish fan. Does Phish and Widespread Panic emanate from fans of the Dead?
I just realized how you chose your name on here. Lol
I literally have never laughed that hard. The puking scene just put me over the edge.
Wasn’t there some scuttlebutt that Dennis Smith may take on Special Teams in some sort of off field capacity?
They’ve gotten really ****** over the years. Even finally giving it to Scorsese The Departed as a mea culpa for years of snubs was a joke.No doubt. I thought the way they filmed it with the camera was outstanding. I feel like it’s gotten lost in the shuffle though. No one ever brings that movie up. I forget about it myself when discussing movies. That was a good one. The Oscars suck. I stopped watching recently. But Traffic deserved some nominations that year.
After this playoff game...going to watch Stop Making Sense....Admittedly, my Panic fandom peaked a while back, though it is also how I become so close with a mutual friend of ours. We traveled to see a good amount of shows together in law school. Phish has always been there for me.
They both somewhat spawned from the general world and ethos, though I’d say Panic would be more closely aligned with the Allman Brothers with two percussionists and southern rock. Their current guitarist was ABB’s guitarist for a bit.
Phish gets out there like the Dead, but actually has much more influence from prog rock whereas the Dead were more Americana, but both approach rock like jazz freestyle jamming. Their songs, especially the older ones, have a lot of those roots. You see a lot of King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, Genesis, Sun Ra type of stuff in their playing and songwriting. And a lot of classical music too. Their lead guitarist has toured and played with Philharmonics a number of times now.
I don’t like any of those bands really, WSP, Phish, the Daead - though they have massive cult followings. I do like some genesis like Abacab.Admittedly, my Panic fandom peaked a while back, though it is also how I become so close with a mutual friend of ours. You used a lot of tin foil didn’t you?Alright another theory from me. Mario is holding off on OC and DC hires until either closer to signing day or after signing day.
Reason being is he knows he’s about to pull an insane class last minute which will turn a ton of heads. With the ultimate hope being that those top OC/DC targets he really wanted see the miracle he just pulled off and realize how legit this dude is.
Departed was based on Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs...which is an awesome movie...They’ve gotten really ****** over the years. Even finally giving it to Scorsese The Departed as a mea culpa for years of snubs was a joke.
Blakey is the GOAT. Man is a general. Now we are talking when you mention Art Blakey, Idris Muhammad, Billy Cobham.
Where are my jazz heads at? Saw Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dr Lonnie Smith, live.
For those interested in current amazing jazz check out:
Kamasi Washington, Theo Croker, Sons Of Kemet, John Carroll Kirby, Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, Robert Glasper, Emma Jean Thackeray, Esperanza Spalding.

Departed was good but not near his best work. I’m prob in the minority but I didn’t like Nicholson in that role. I thought that was miscast.Departed was based on Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs...which is an awesome movie...
I like Departed but Scorsese deserved it for prior films..not that one
They are for sure not for everyone, but a quick rabbit hole to fall down if they are for you.I don’t like any of those bands really, WSP, Phish, the Daead - though they have massive cult followings. I do like some genesis like Abacab.
I went to school in New Orleans, so you’re speaking my language. Tons of free shows on campus, Jazzfest, Tuesdays at the Maple Leaf, and a roommate who dated the manager of tipitinas and booking manager for Jazzfest. We saw a LOT of music during that time. Now we are talking when you mention Art Blakey, Idris Muhammad, Billy Cobham.

Love this video. The part that trips me out is when he is playing 2 drums with his left and 5 drums sequentially forward and backwards with his right without looking. The level of difficulty is amazing!
My deceased genius crazy great uncle who worked on the proximity fuse during WWII - before he was out of his teens - grew up on the same street or building as him in Brooklyn. Used to hear him playing all the time. Said they called him the boy genius or something.

Kamasi is incredible. I’ll have to check out those others on your list.
Wwoz.org has to get my radio station vote, however.

I miss so much of the area. To be honest, once Frenchmen stopped being a hidden, in the know enclave for the best live music, I stopped spending much time in the quarter at night. We will go during the day to walk around, but at night will either go to the Bywater, dinner in the Warehouse, or just go uptown. It’s a shame too. Frenchmen had such a great charm and you could bounce between dozens of amazing bars and venues in one block.I still live in the area and used to go down to the French qtr a lot and take in the different jazz sounds….French qtr has gotten bad with crime and smell lately not to mention Covid so I don’t go as much but man listening to the sounds coming out of the different clubs was unbelievable.
We have a Frenchy painting of Jacques hanging in our office. Jacques (Jack) actually got his EMBA that same year that I graduated and sat in front of me at graduation. Still wearing his crocs and chef pants, and the only time I’ve seen him sober(ish). The night before he refused to give my parents the check until my entire family took a shot with him, including my at the time 16 year old brother and 18 year old sister, which he was aware of.Nothing like a deep fried roast beef sandwich at Jaques Imo's followed by a George Porter Jr show next door at the ML.
